Pedro van Raamsdonk (born October 2, 1960 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch boxer . He was European light heavyweight professional boxer champion .

Career

Amateur career

Pedro van Raamsdonk started boxing at the age of 10 with the Albert Cuyp boxing team in Amsterdam . At the age of 16 he joined the Dutch boxing junior team. In 1979 he was the first time Dutch champion in the senior middleweight division. He won this title a total of seven times in his career. In 1980 he stayed in the United States and took 1st place in the middleweight division at the Californian Golden Gloves in San Francisco .

In 1981 he surprised the professional world when he advanced to the finals at the European Middleweight Championship in Tampere and only suffered a defeat with 1: 4 judges' votes by the Soviet athlete Juri Torbek . On the way to this vice-European title, Pedro van Raamsdonk defeated Ivan Gonda from the CSSR with a 5-0 judge's vote. Against Jimmy Price from England he won just 3: 2 judges votes and against Valentin Silaghi from Romania he won in the semifinals with 4: 1 judges votes.

Pedro van Raamsdonk also won a medal at the 1982 World Cup in Munich . He reached the semi-finals there with victories over Frank Clausen ( Denmark ) and Mwehu Beya ( Zaire ), in which he clearly lost 0: 5 judges' votes against the Finn Tarmo Uusivirta . At the 1983 European Championships in Varna , he met local hero Ilya Angelow in the first round, against whom he lost on points.

Pedro van Raamsdonk celebrated a notable victory in 1985 in Copenhagen at the Copenhagen Light Heavyweight Cup . He won there in the final battle against the Poles Stanislaw Lakomiec on points. However, his participation in the European Championships in Budapest that year was crowned with no success , because he lost his first fight there against René Suetovius from the GDR and was eliminated.

Profile career

Pedro van Raamsdonk played his first professional fight on February 17, 1986 in Arnhem . He defeated the Croatian Mladen Grubesic in the light heavyweight division by technical knockout in the 2nd round. On April 6, 1987 in Tilburg he won the championship title of the Benelux countries in cruiser weight by winning points after 10 rounds over Sergio Bosio.

On May 18, 1987, he was in Amsterdam by a points win after 10 rounds over John Held Dutch light heavyweight champion. On September 7th, 1988 he added another success to his success, because he was trained in Berkshine in England by a techn. Knockout victory in the 7th round over Tom Collins EBU European light heavyweight champion. But he lost this title two months later when on November 7, 1988 in Rotterdam against his Dutch compatriot Jan Lefeber lost after 12 rounds on points.

All further attempts to win another title in the following years failed. On May 29, 1989 Pedro van Raamsdonk lost in Scheveningen in the fight for the Dutch championship title against John Emmen by technical knockout in the 7th round. His eyes were so swollen that he could no longer box and had to be taken out of the fight by the referee. On January 26th, 1960 he lost in Perpignan while trying to win the EBU European Championship again, against the Frenchman Eric Nicoletta after 12 rounds on points and also in the attempt to win the Dutch cruiser championship again on August 31st, 1991 in Willemstad . He failed to gain weight due to a knockout loss in the 10th round against Hubert Zimmermann.

Pedro van Raamsdonk played his last fight on October 28, 1991 in Arnhem against the Englishman Roger McKenzie, against whom he also lost by knockout. Then he resigned from professional boxing.

After boxing

Pedro van Raamsdonk has been a member of the Amsterdam Fire Brigade since 1993 . He also works as a personal trainer and holds boxing courses for groups.
