Yuri Wassiljewitsch Arsenjew ( Russian Юрий Васильевич Арсеньев ; born February 3, 1857 in Saint Petersburg , † February 4, 1919 in Moscow ) was a Russian-Baltic nobleman and real councilor of state in the Russian Empire . He was a chamberlain , genealogist , heraldist and professor .

Life

His military training began as a guard in the cadet corps of the Imperial Russian Navy. Promoted to Mitschman , he took part in several expeditions and boat trips. When he was in the United States in 1877 , he was elected a corresponding member of the American Geographical Society . He then served as a naval officer in the Danube Flotilla and was deployed in 1878 during the Austro-Hungarian administration of Bosnia and Herzegovina . Ultimately he was a guard officer and left the military in 1883.

From 1884 to 1898 he was in local institutions of the provinces Tula worked and was since 1888 spokesman landscape representation , he also held from 1888 to 1890 the post of honor and justice of the peace , the Мировой суд in the district Nowosilsky. It was here that his interest in local history developed , researched archives and published documents on the history of Russia in the 17th century. From 1898 to 1919 he served as the first director of the Moscow Kremlin's Armory and drafted a guide . From 1907 he was a professor at the Moscow Archaeological Institute and gave lectures and courses on heraldry and genealogy. During this time he wrote several monographs on the history of heraldry and standard theory. In 1910 he was a committee member on the question of Russian national colors.

Awards

For his service and in recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the Order of Saint Stanislaus (3rd class) and the Order of St. Vladimir (3rd class) decorated . He was awarded the silver medal of the Russian Geographical Society for the publication of the travel diary to China N. Spafari (February 1883).

JV Arseniev was the author of a number of articles on the history of heraldry, flags and banners . He developed concepts for understanding heraldry and a methodology for source research and comparative analysis of banners.

Origin and family

JW Arsenjew came from the Russian-Baltic aristocratic family Arsenjew , he was the son of the Real Secret Council Vasily Sergejewitsch Arsenjew (1829-1915), who was married to Natalie Dolgoruky (1830-1902). His brothers were Sergej Wassiljewitsch Arsenjew (1854-1922) and Ivan Vasiljewitsch Arsenjew (1862-1930). Yuri Wassiljewitsch married Olga Lvovna Volkov (1861–1940).
