Life

Jurij Wilkul was born in Kryvyi Rih in the west of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and studied there between 1968 and 1973 at the Technical University. From 1987 to 2006 he worked at the Technical University of Krywyj Rih, first as a lecturer, then as an associate professor, head of the research complex, head of department, finally vice-rector, prorector and since 2003 as rector. Between August 30, 2006 and June 3, 2010 he was Chairman of the Oblast Parliament of Dnepropetrovsk Oblast. He then returned to his university as deputy rector until November 2010 and was elected mayor of Krywyj Rih in November 2010. Wilkul is an honorary citizen of his hometown.

He was a member of the KPU , then the Party of Regions, and ran for the opposition bloc in the 2015 local elections .

His son Oleksandr Wilkul (* 1974) is also a politician and member of the opposition bloc.

Local election 2015/2016

In the local elections in Krywyj Rih in November 2015, Wilkul narrowly won the second ballot against his challenger for mayor's office. However, he was accused of fraudulent elections and protests broke out in the city. The head of the Central Electoral Commission, Mychajlo Ochendowskyj , who was appointed under the presidency of Viktor Yanukovych , on the other hand, considers the election to be legitimate and the questioning of its legitimacy as politically motivated. On December 23, 2015, the Verkhovna Rada terminated Yury Wilkul's powers as mayor of Kryvyi Rih and ordered a new mayor for March 27, 2016. With a turnout of 55.88%, Wilkul won the new election with 73% of the vote. His challenger Semen Sementschenko , who became known as the commander of the Donbass paramilitary battalion in the war in eastern Ukraine , only won 11% of the vote.
