Semen Sementschenko ( Ukrainian Семе́н Семе́нченко ; born June 6, 1974 in Sevastopol ) is the pseudonym of the commander of the volunteer Ukrainian task force Battalion Donbass, founded in April 2014 . In September 2014, he declared that his real name was Konstantin Grischin .
Life
Before joining the Donbass battalion, he claims to have been a businessman and Ukrainian officer. Sementschenko always appeared in public masked with a balaclava , his identity was not known. On August 19, 2014, Sementchenko was seriously wounded by splinters during fighting in Donetsk Oblast . On September 1, the Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenjuk awarded him the Bogdan Khmelnitsky Order of Third Class. On this occasion, pictures of Semchenko showing him without a mask were published in the Ukrainian media for the first time. In a television broadcast in September 2014, he declared that his real name was Konstantin Grishin. He was born in Crimea in 1974 and studied film in Moscow . Since the 1990s he has worked for “a very wealthy man in Donetsk”. Sementschenko held talks with US politicians and arms manufacturers in Washington, DC in September 2014. According to Tagesspiegel , he wrote on his Facebook page: “We talked to our American friends about anti-tank weapons, radar, drones and many others useful things to defend our country. In Washington you understand what our goal is. "
In the parliamentary elections in Ukraine in 2014 , Sementschenko ran for second place on the list of the Samopomitsch party and was elected to the Verkhovna Rada . In 2015/2016, Semchenko ran for mayor of the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih , but lost only 11% of the votes to Yuri Wilkul from the opposition bloc (73%).
