Gameplay

The game is a third-person shooter in which the player steers his character on foot or by vehicle through a freely accessible island world and fights against the soldiers of the fictional dictator. He can use vehicles, airplanes and ships of all kinds to move freely on the approximately one thousand square kilometers of national territory and to carry out his main and optional side missions. The game includes 20 campaign missions and 300 side missions, as well as 90 controllable vehicles. With the help of his special equipment, such as a parachute integrated into his jacket or a grappling hook in pistol format, the player can perform various acrobatic performances. For example, it is possible to windsurf a moving car or hijack a helicopter.

The developers describe the hero as:

“The child of one thousand comic books and action movies. He is James Bond, Mad Max, El Mariachi, Wolverine, Punisher, Rambo, Tony Montana, Jack Bauer, Han Solo and Vincent Vega all rolled into one. With a touch of Enrique Iglesias to top it all off! "

Erik Brudvig from the British online magazine IGN Entertainment gave Just Cause a moderate rating. He praised the extraordinarily large game world and the great freedom of play. He also described the visual and acoustic presentation as well done. However, he complained that much of the game content was designed too similarly and with little variety. He also criticized some programming errors. Overall, he described Just Cause as a game with good ideas that was released too early and too quickly.

Eurogamer's Kristan Reed rated the game similarly. The game offers a multitude of possibilities and a large selection of vehicles, but he criticized the fact that some elements, such as tasks or ambient noise, are repeated too often. In the technical area, too, mainly in the Windows version, the author mentioned deficiencies, for example in the animations of the characters, which he describes as sometimes unsuitable.
