Just Cause 2 is a computer game from the third-person shooter genre that was released in 2010 and is the successor to Just Cause , which was released in 2006 . It was developed by the Swedish developer Avalanche Studios and published by Square Enix for the Windows , Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms . The original publisher was Eidos Interactive , which was bought by Square Enix in 2009.

Except for the main character, Rico Rodriguez, the game has no plot connection to its predecessor. Nevertheless, the plot and structure are very similar. The player is sent to the fictional and completely freely explorable Pacific island of Panau , which is 1024 km² in size, according to the developer , in order to eliminate the dictator Pandak Panay for an American secret service. In addition, he supports several rebel groups on the island and sabotages military bases and supply facilities.

Just Cause 2 was received positively by the trade press. The online database Metacritic , which collects and evaluates test reports, calculated average ratings of between 81 and 85 out of 100 points for the individual versions. Testers particularly praised the large game world and the resulting great playful freedom. The plot, dialogues and the lack of variety in the missions were criticized.

When it went on sale, the title took first place in the UK sales charts. According to Square Enix, approximately 1.48 million units had been sold through September 2010.

The successor Just Cause 3 was released on December 1, 2015 for Windows , Xbox One and PlayStation 4 .

action

The US is concerned about the Southeast Asian island nation of Panau, as the pro-US President Panaus has been assassinated and the island's foreign policy course has changed significantly under the new ruler Pandak Panay. Therefore the American secret service agency has ordered an agent, Tom Sheldon, to the island to observe the conditions there.

Contact with this agent was lost. The agency assumes that Sheldon has switched sides. So she sends another agent, Rico Rodriguez, to find Sheldon. He is hiding on the island due to the government's xenophobic policy.

In addition, someone is calling for a rebellion against President Panay under the code name White Tiger . In order to get information about the White Tiger, Rico supports local rebel organizations that formed when the president came to power. There are a total of three rebel groups, the communist- oriented Reapers , the mafia-like Roaches and the nationalist Ular Boys . Rico supports the factions by helping them take over fortresses and completing various missions for them. At the same time, he receives orders from the agency, which also serve to weaken the regime.

While working in a temple for one of the rebel groups, Rico meets the White Tiger, who identifies himself as the wanted agent Tom Sheldon . After fleeing a major attack by government forces, the two work together, with Sheldon organizing arms deliveries.

As the game progresses, the player learns that the rebel groups are supported by Japan, China or Russia. All these nations, as well as Rico's client from the USA, are targeting the oil deposits in the Panau Sea. Rico is therefore set on the supporters from the three states, who are mostly former high-ranking military. He succeeds in eliminating this in the Three Kings Hotel in Panau.

Finally he sets out to take out President Panay. After an assassination attempt in his property failed, Rico attacks him in a nuclear submarine, which turns out to be the president's last retreat. The President fired four nuclear missiles with this , aimed at Japan , China , Russia and the United States. Rico manages to defuse the missiles, killing the president. A rocket hits the island's oil reserves, destroying them. As a result, the four great powers lose interest in Panau.

Gameplay

General

The core element of Just Cause 2 is the single player campaign. In this, the player tries to destabilize the government of the island nation of Panau by all means. Most of this happens in free play by attacking government property that is scattered across the island. These include barracks, propaganda vehicles, statues of the president, water towers or power plants.

In free play, the player has no set goals, but can explore the game world on his own. There are many options open to him. The focus is on the sabotage of government institutions. Furthermore, the player can support local rebel organizations. Aside from the fight against the government, the player can compete in races, both in the air, on land and at sea. In return, the player receives money with which he can purchase equipment. The races can be repeated as often as you like.

The plot of the game is told in the form of a campaign. This consists of several extensive missions that the player can complete one after the other. As the story progresses, the player unlocks new equipment. Otherwise the action takes a rather subordinate position in the game.

The player receives his equipment from a friend from the agency. He can request weapons and vehicles from him and be dropped off by helicopter at any location that has already been discovered. However, the player is not dependent on this equipment, he can find weapons, ammunition and vehicles in the game world or steal them.

A grappling hook and a parachute are available to the player for jumping and mountaineering. With the grappling hook, the player can also pull himself up on house walls or trees. But he can also use it against his opponents. He can chain soldiers or enemy vehicles to objects such as buildings and thus obstruct them.

Like its predecessor , the game uses unusual game physics that are heavily action-oriented and make the game character extraordinarily resilient. For example, the player can stand on flying planes, survive several volleys of fire or survive falls from several meters largely unscathed. The vehicles have a detailed damage model. Some of the visible vehicle parts are severely deformable.

The PlayStation 3 version of the game has a video function that players can use to record the game and then either watch it in the XrossMediaBar or upload it to YouTube .

Rebels

On Panau, the player can come into contact with three rebel groups. At the beginning of the game, these groups each have a small base. The player comes into contact with the three groups one after the other and supports them in conquering fortresses of the Panau army. Every fortress controlled by the rebels serves the player from now on as a base where he receives weapons and vehicles. The rebels also regularly send patrols to attack government forces near the base. Furthermore, they regularly offer the player side missions.

chaos

The progress of the player in the campaign is symbolized by so-called chaos points . The player collects these points by destroying government property or completing missions for the rebel factions. This is causing concern among the population and the military in Panau, which weakens the president. By collecting Chaos Points, new weapons, vehicles and missions are unlocked. Even after completing the campaign and unlocking all black market objects, causing chaos is still useful, as the destruction of all government property on the island is necessary to complete the game 100%.

vehicles

Also military aircraft can be used in Just Cause 2 play

A variety of vehicles are available to the player. All models are fictitious models. The vehicles included in the game include cars, trucks, motorcycles, airplanes, helicopters, and boats. The player can buy a certain selection of these through his contact with the agency. The player can also improve these vehicles in terms of speed, robustness and armament using the equipment found on the island. Alternatively, he can steal vehicles on the island. If the player tries to steal vehicles from the military, a fire fight ensues.

Collectable objects

In Just Cause 2 , the player can collect a variety of objects while exploring the island. For example, there are various boxes with spare parts with which the player can upgrade the weapons and vehicles offered by his agency contact. There are also cash boxes that the player can use to buy equipment.

Other bonus objects come from the three rebel groups. Each of these has a special object, such as a drug suitcase or smuggled box, 100 of which were lost on the island. The player can collect these.

The developers of Just Cause 2 built some hidden special features, so-called Easter eggs, into the game world, for example secret depots with numerous weapons, a hot air balloon or a soap bubble gun. Allusions to the American television series Lost , which include a remote island and a floor hatch and a crashed plane on that island, have been frequently picked up by reporters .

development

Just Cause 2 was first introduced at E3 2009, alongside other titles such as Halo: Reach .

The development of Just Cause 2 was originally performed under the direction of Eidos Interactive. The first details about the development were released by Avalanche employees in early 2008. The leading designer Peter Johansson stated that the development goals were to make the game world appear livelier than in the predecessor and to want to improve stunt and fight scenes. The development of Just Cause 2 was originally supposed to be finished in late 2008. A demonstration of the title at the E3 game fair in Los Angeles was also planned for the same year . However, the development was delayed, also due to downsizing at the developer Avalanche Studios. The announced release date was only postponed to 2009 and finally to mid-2010. In June 2009 the first trailer was released, which showed some game scenes. The game was finally presented to the public for the first time at E3 2009. In an interview later published on the Internet, the game director Magnus Nedfors presented the innovations of Just Cause 2 . The main character's grappling hook played an important role both in this interview and in demo videos published later. Compared to its predecessor, it is now more versatile and easier to use. As further differences to the predecessor, a significantly larger and more diverse game world, as well as more variety in the game principle, were mentioned, two points that the trade press often criticized at Just Cause . Another special feature of Just Cause 2 , which the predecessor also had, but which was often taken up by reporters, was the explosive game physics, for which several videos were published by the developers and by game magazines.

On November 24, 2009, Square Enix, which Eidos Interactive had since acquired and acted as the new publisher, announced that Just Cause 2 would be launching Just Cause 2 on March 23 of next year in North America and over the next few weeks in Europe, Asia and Oceania will appear.

Some actors known from American series such as Jason Chan , Jules de Jonge and Junix Inocian were hired for the English dubbing . Johannes Semm , who has already worked on several Star Wars and Mass Effect titles, was involved in the German dubbing .

The Windows version is one of the first titles to be optimized for DirectX 10 . Therefore Just Cause 2 cannot run on Windows XP . This became known through the publication of official system requirements. Unlike the console versions, the Windows version supports some advanced graphic techniques such as screen space ambient occlusion or soft shadows. The developers worked closely with the GPU manufacturer Nvidia during the development , so that the title supports new technologies developed by Nvidia such as CUDA and 3D Vision .

publication

At the end of March 2010, the title finally appeared, initially in North America, a few days later in Europe and Australia. On June 10th of the same year, Just Cause 2 was also released on the Japanese market. At the time of publication, the game was linked to the Steam distribution platform . Pre-orderers received additional game content, such as a map or additional equipment. This included the first expansion to the game, Bull's Eye Assault , which added an additional assault rifle to the game.

Additional items, so-called DLCs, were released for both free and paid download after release. These initially included new vehicles, such as an armored ice cream truck or a monster truck. Later DLCs also included new weapons and other pieces of equipment. The seventh and final expansion for Just Cause 2 was released in early May 2010 under the title Black Market Aerial Pack .

The title was included by Sony in the Instant Game Collection of their PlayStation Plus network, making it available to users of the paid Sony service free of charge. According to their own statement, the developers earned nothing from it. Square Enix also ran a competition to perform an extraordinary stunt with any vehicle. Players had a few months to create their own videos according to certain criteria and present them to a jury via the Internet. The winner, whose stunt consisted of flying an airplane through the corridor connecting two high-rise buildings, received a prize of $ 10,000 in October 2010.

On October 22, 2010, the Just Cause 2 soundtrack was released on the game's official website. It is titled Just Cause 2: Music To Blow S ** t Up By and comprises eleven titles taken from the game.

On December 17th, 2013 the Just Cause 2: Multiplayer Mod was released. This modification was originally started by gamers and was later picked up and supported by developer Avalanche. It enables several players to interact with one another in the game world. Together they can play mini-games against each other or attack villages and fortresses. The modification adds a full-fledged multiplayer mode that was not previously included in the game. The modification was released through Steam. It received the Mod of the Year 2013 award from the Game Front website. A map editor was added in a later version of the mod.

Just Cause 2 received largely positive reviews from the trade press. The ratings for the individual platforms were quite similar. The online database Metacritic calculated average scores, so-called meta scores, of over 80 out of 100 points for all versions.

The centerpiece, the game world, received a lot of attention. Kevin VanOrd from the English language magazine GameSpot praised the design of the game environment. It is one of the greatest of all time and offers a lot of content, more than that of its predecessor. Eric Neigher from 1UP praised the diversity of the environment, with wide, dry deserts, large cities and snowy mountain regions. Mathias Oertel from the German magazine 4Players was also positive about the size of the game world, but he criticized that the world was designed too lifeless in many places. The game suffers from the same problem as Far Cry 2 that players are too often underemployed. Carsten Görig from Spiegel , on the other hand, praised the fact that the game world was the trump card of the game. Eurogamer's Simon Parkin described the island as a large, versatile playground that would keep gamers busy for a long time.

Testers also praised the large number of vehicles and weapons available. However, according to Fabian Siegismund from GameStar , aircraft in particular suffer from very vague and imprecise controls. However, according to Telegraph's Nick Cowen, the most outstanding means of transportation in the game are Ricos grappling hook and parachute, which are good for spectacular stunts.

The physics engine, which is unusual because it is extremely action-packed, takes getting used to, but offers many opportunities for experimentation. Ryan Clements described them as suitable to take on Hollywood films. However, Van Ord criticized the fact that she was more prone to incorrect calculations and thus incomprehensible reactions. The online magazine Kotaku published several game reviews and videos with tests of game physics that showed extraordinary game scenes.

From a technical point of view, the game is largely convincing. Many testers agreed that the island would be well presented. The game runs steadily and smoothly throughout. The setting, however, is less convincing. In addition to isolated errors in sound effects, the quality of the synchronization is rather mediocre. IGN's Ryan Clements continued to criticize the storage system for being too unpredictable in free play. In missions, however, save points are too rare. As a further problem, Oertel named artificial intelligence , which is rather moderate. Siegismund generally described it as tumb.

Many testers named the design of the plot and the characters as the weakest point. Van Ord described them as very flat. Fabian Siegismund wrote that the missions were too monotonous. Clements complained that the cutscenes were boring. Entertaining, however, is the lack of seriousness that shows in overdrawn characters and bizarre opponents. Cowen criticized that the characters were poorly designed and look unappealing.

In a separate test by GameStar, Just Cause 2 was compared with Grand Theft Auto IV and Saboteur , two other open world games, in terms of freedom of action, variety and design of the surroundings. The title did particularly well in the areas of game world size and graphics. He received lower ratings for character development and the skills of computer characters.

Just Cause 2 was nominated for the 28th Golden Joystick Award in the best action game category, which Assassin's Creed II won. The title was also recognized by the German test magazine GameRadio for its graphics, sound and gameplay.

Sales figures

Just Cause 2 topped the top 10 best-selling games in the UK in the first week after launch. In Sweden, the title was ranked eighth on a similar list. According to the publisher Square Enix about 1.48 million units of the game were sold through September 2010 for all platforms. On September 10, 2013 Christopher Sundberg, the founder of Avalanche Studios announced via the social network Twitter that Just Cause 2 had been played by over 6 million players so far. In the multiplayer mode introduced by a modification, around 3,000 new players are recorded every week. Around 500,000 players play every month.

Media based on the game

Even before the release of Just Cause 2 , the then publisher Eidos announced that a film would be planned for the game series of the same name. Adrian Askarieh was recruited as producer , who had already directed film adaptations of the Hitman and Kane and Lynch game series for the same publisher . A few months after the game was released, Michael Ross was hired to be a screenwriter. A year later it was announced that Bryan Edward Hill would also work as a screenwriter on the film, which has since received the working title Just Cause: Scorpion Rising . The producer also announced that the production of the film would still wait, as they would not seek investors until later.

Shortly after the publication, speculations arose about a successor. The developer did not comment at the time, but announced a renewed cooperation with Square Enix, which has already secured corresponding domains . A number of job advertisements were also posted at Avalanche from 2012.

Just Cause 3 was officially announced on November 11, 2014 . It was released on December 1, 2015 for Windows, as well as for the two consoles Xbox One and PlayStation 4 .
