Just Christian Stuss

Just Christian Stuß (also Justus ; born June 11, 1725 in Ilfeld , † November 24, 1788 in Waltershausen ) was a German classical philologist , writer and Protestant clergyman .

Life

Stuss was the first son of the Ilfeld Vice Rector Johann Heinrich Stuss . In 1728, when his father accepted an appointment as rector of the Gothaer Gymnasium illustrious , he moved with him to Gotha. There he received private lessons from Friedrich Albrecht Augusti and then from 1736 attended the local grammar school illustrious. In addition to his father, the Gotha teacher Johann Michael Heusinger awakened his enthusiasm for ancient languages. In addition to theology , he devoted himself to this from 1741 while studying at the University of Göttingen . Because of his parents' relationships, he was accepted into the philological seminar of Hofrat Johann Matthias Gesner and also a member of the German Society in Göttingen. In 1745 he left the university and became a tutor to a nobleman in Cadenberge . After his death he returned to Gotha in 1747. There he got a job as a page steward from Duke Friedrich . Stuss returned to the Göttingen University after just one year, where he obtained his master's degree with the work Philosophemata quaedam de fide ad librum IV. Academicorum Ciceronis . The graduation took place in the presence of King George II of Great Britain .

In the autumn of 1748, Stuss was hired as vice rector of the pedagogy in Ilfeld . In 1752 he became Vice Rector there . The death of his wife induced him to return to theology. He was ordained in Gotha. On April 12, 1761 he took up a position as a garrison preacher in this city. After five years, in 1766, he became pastor and adjunct in Molschleben and finally in 1772 pastor and superintendent in Waltershausen. He remained in this office until his death due to illness.
