The Pagengoverneur (also: Pagengo u verneur or Page Hofmeister ) was a function carrier at a princely court. He often exercised the civil court office in a secondary function. Often they were officers who were on duty at the cadet institute that had to provide the court with the pages. A page governor was responsible for the organization and training of the page corps at court, which comprised up to 40 pages . During festivities at court he had to lead the operation of the pages working there. He was usually under the court marshal's office .

Prussian royal court

The page governor Captain Ernst Friedrich von Billerbeck is named in the box bills of Frederick the Great and other documents kept in the Secret State Archives of Prussian Cultural Heritage . In the manual on the Royal Prussian Court and State for the year 1798 , the court page institute consisting of the page governor, a court master, two personal pages and twelve court pages is described; a major von Rahlke was then appointed as page governor. The Potsdamer Hofpageninstitut received its pages after completing the training at the Berlin Cadet Academy. The page governor was assigned a position in the marching party for the coronation of Wilhelm I and Augusta from the royal apartments in Königsberg Castle to Königsberg Castle Church on January 2, 1861.

German imperial court

The page corps at the German imperial court consisted of 30 to 40 selected pupils from the Prussian main cadet institution in Lichterfelde . The office of page governor was held by officers of this military training institute, such as the adjutant of the cadet institute. The Guide to the Prussian court and state specified for the court of William II. The court-pages Institute , which consisted of two body pages (for the Emperor and Empress) and 24 Hofpagen. Among the only noble names of the pages mentioned here are those of Kurt von Schleicher and Franz von Papen . The responsible page governor had to prepare the cadets for their service at court. The page governor was responsible for training and supervision, especially on solemn occasions when page services had to be performed at court. For the year 1896 a first lieutenant von Seidlitz was named as a page governor. In 1907 a Captain von Flotow was a page governor at the Hof-Page Institute in Berlin.

Royal Court of Hanover

In the " Page Regulations" of the manual for the establishment and management of a court - The Court Marshal of Carl Ernst von Malortie it was specified that the commander of the cadet company acted as page governor at the Hanoverian court, the cadets had to take over the functions of the pages. The page governor was subordinate to the court marshal's office and had to give the pages the necessary instructions about their services and to personally manage and supervise the work of the pages (usually being dragged and waiting at the table) during the court festivals. He had to receive the uniforms of the pages to be deployed from the High Court Commissioner and to return them after use. The page governor also had to make suggestions to the Oberhofmarschallamt about pages to be used; the final decision, however, rests with the Oberhofmarschallamt. Like the court marshal, the page governor had to report to the head of the cadet institute.

Under the British King George III. In the 1780s, a page governor at the court in Hanover was paid 20 thalers. At the time, ten to twenty pages had to be available for the meal service with the ruling power and the princes. The page governor was instructed to see that the pages were diligent and decent in this service. So you should always have a clean napkin on hand to hold the plates with. A page governor in Hanover in the 1670s was the Italian clergyman Bonaventura Nardini, who was in contact with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz .
