Count Philippe-Paul de Ségur (born November 4, 1780 in Paris , † February 25, 1873 there ) was a French officer and the son of Louis-Philippe de Ségur .

Life

In 1799 he joined the army as a hussar and took part in Moreau's campaign in Bavaria and Macdonald's campaign in Graubünden. In 1802 he became a member of Napoleon's personal staff . In 1805 he negotiated the surrender of Ulm with the Austrian General Mack . During the Polish campaign he was taken prisoner by the Russians, from which he was freed in the same year by the Peace of Tilsit in 1807. As Napoleon's adjutant, he personally led the attack on the Somosierra mountain pass in 1808 and was then promoted to colonel .

After he had served in the Russian campaign in 1812 as Général de brigade in Napoleon's entourage, he organized the Gardes d'honneur de la Garde impériale at the beginning of the campaign of 1814 and received after Napoleon's overthrow of Louis XVIII. the command of the cavalry , which had been created from the remnants of the old guard . Since he had allowed himself to be used by Napoleon as chief of staff of the army corps ordered to cover the Rhine during the reign of the Hundred Days , he withdrew into private life after the second restoration and wrote his Histoire de Napoléon et de la grande armée pendant in 1812 , which followed the General Gaspard Gourgaud gave rise to his examen critique and consequently to a duel with de Segur.
