Köchin in der Taiga is a documentary from DEFA Studios for Documentary Films by Karlheinz Mund from 1976 .

action

Since the 1960s we know about the stock of oil and natural gas in Western Siberia , in the area of the rivers between Ob and Irtysh , which is 15 times larger than the GDR . Here you can only develop new deposits in winter when the ground is frozen, otherwise everything would sink in the swampy area. The road crosses the Irtysh for three to four months, otherwise you can only get around by helicopter or ship. The base is a newly built city, from which the drilling sites can be reached in some cases several 100 kilometers away. The geologists and drillers have made their home here when they are not at their workplaces in the taiga.

Lina, a 22-year-old native Ukrainian , works here as a cook. First she worked for the assembly brigades and now for the oil rigs , she likes it when they squeak and make noise. The first time she flew into the taiga by plane and saw the large areas of forest, she wanted to go straight back home. But the workers used a few tricks to convince them to stay. At her drilling site, she has up to 70 people, whom she calls boys, to provide three meals a day. In addition to the preparations, this also includes cooking and washing up. She is solely responsible for all of these activities. If one of her colleagues is not doing so well, she feels responsible for rebuilding them. Often the boys just come to the canteen to sit, play guitar and sing. In return, Lina likes to watch the drillers doing their work, but without understanding what they are really doing. For them, a shift lasts eight hours and it is very hard physical work because it is still not mechanized enough. The working time at the derrick is 12 days, after which they have four days off, which they spend in the settlement. It becomes particularly difficult when the temperatures are as low as minus 55 degrees Celsius for a month. It has also happened once before that the electrical power went out for almost two days.

Lina has 14 days off and spends this time with her six-year-old son Ruslan, whom she recently brought from Ukraine from her grandmother. He will start school soon and she will then look for a job in the city, which will also require a larger apartment. She still regrets getting married way too early and stresses that she will regret it forever. When she got married she was not even 16 years old and looking back she can't even tell if she was in love. In Ukraine it is very common to get married very early and therefore there are a lot of divorces. Lina and her new boyfriend have been together for a year now. They have decided not to get married anytime soon and want to test whether they are a real family over the next four years. If you have a child during this time, you will need to reconsider this planning.
