The King Ferdinand orchid ( Ophrys regis-ferdinandii (Eight. & Kellerer ex Renz) Buttler , Syn .: Ophrys speculum subsp. Regis-ferdinandii (Eight. & Kellerer ex Renz) Soó ) is a species of the genus Ragwurzen ( Ophrys ) in the family of orchid plants (Orchidaceae). It is named after Ferdinand I of Bulgaria .

Plant description

This herbaceous perennial plant reaches heights of between 5 and 30 centimeters.

The inflorescence includes two to eleven flowers , which are slightly smaller than the flowers of the Spiegel-Ragwurz ( Ophrys speculum ). The sepals have a strong brownish red color , while the often narrow petals are yellow with a brown base or only brown in color. The middle lobe of the strongly three-lobed lip has a dark or yellow hairless edge. This middle lobe is almost flat lengthways, but strongly arched across. The violet-blue to dark purple mark has an orange to yellow-brown border.

The flowering period extends from March to April. This species flowers around the same time as the Iberian mirror ragwurz ( Ophrys vernixia ).

Distribution and site conditions

The area extends over the east of the Aegean Sea and comprises three sub-areas. This species occurs in Chios , on Rhodes , Samos , Simi , Tilos and on the coast of western Turkey at altitudes between 0 and 400 meters above sea level.

The König-Ferdinand-Ragwurz can be found in light forests, garrigues , poor grasslands and on former cultivated land with moderately dry, alkaline soils.
