The Lucerne Culture and Congress Center ( KKL ) opened in 1998. The KKL, built according to the plans of the architect Jean Nouvel , is a multifunctional building in the city of Lucerne . The concert hall, which is valued for its acoustics , is the heart of the center. There are also various restaurants, the multifunctional Lucerne Hall, various congress and meeting rooms and the Lucerne Art Museum in the KKL. The KKL was opened in 1998 with a concert by the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Claudio Abbado .
architecture
Jean Nouvel originally planned to build the new concert hall in the shape of a ship directly in Lake Lucerne . This idea could not be implemented for urban and ecological reasons. Nouvel revised the project and came up with the following solution: If I cannot go to the water, the water should come to me. With the term inclusion, Nouvel describes his idea of bringing the outside in and the inside out. With water channels that lead directly into the building and a roof that extends over the lake, Nouvel gives his idea of inclusion a concrete form. The two water channels created three independent parts of the building: the concert hall wing, the Lucerne hall wing, and the congress and museum wing. The three buildings are lined up like ships in the shipyard and differ in their own identity. The architecture of the KKL also expresses the philosophy of the house: a wide variety of events take place under one large roof, not just individually, but - with permeable borders - also with each other. These events include the areas of culture, congresses and gastronomy.
costs
The construction costs for the KKL amounted to CHF 226.5 million (including the underground car park). The house on Lake Lucerne was jointly financed by the public sector and private investors.
Concert hall
The concert hall, created by acoustician Russel Johnson in collaboration with Jean Novel, is considered one of the best halls for classical concerts . The visual as well as the technical interior fittings were examples of the Dortmund concert hall . The sound body in the form of a ship's hull has, among other things, electrically adjustable sound / echo chambers and specially designed plaster reliefs. This variable design enables coordination to the different requirements of the music being played. The isolation of the sound body is particularly complex, for example the entrances were designed as locks. Optimal acoustics are achieved through the ratio of room height, width and length in a ratio of 1: 1: 2 (22:22:46 meters), the so-called shoebox principle . The hall volume of 19,000 m³ gives the sound enough space and thus creates a round, soft reverberation. An additional acoustic element are the around 24,000 square plaster reliefs with an edge length of 20 centimeters, which break up, multiply and distribute the sound reflection. The organ in the concert hall was installed in 2000 by the organ company Goll AG (Lucerne). The loop shop instrument has 66 registers on four manuals and a pedal. The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are mechanical and electrical.

For several weeks in late summer, the house is reserved for the classical concerts of the Lucerne Festival , which offers a music program with the best philharmonic orchestras in the world. In addition to the classical concerts, traditional folk music, brass music, jazz and blues is offered. Other important festivals with an international character have been the Blue Balls Festival in summer and the World Band Festival Lucerne in autumn since 1999 . In addition to the numerous festivals, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and the Obrasso Concerts concert agency are among the largest cultural organizers in the KKL.
The KKL Luzern also houses various dining facilities. Events, conferences, seminars, lectures, congresses and readings of various sizes take place regularly in the meeting and congress rooms.
history
The Konzerthaus Foundation was founded in 1988 under President Walter von Moos. Alice Bucher, publisher and patroness , donated 960,000 francs to the city of Lucerne for an architecture competition.
In 1989 the architects Jean Nouvel and Emmanuel Cattani, Paris, won the competition for a new concert hall in Lucerne. The old culture and congress center was not placed under monument protection in 1991.
Jean Nouvel presented the architectural concept in 1992. In November 1993, the governments of the city and canton of Lucerne approved CHF 94 million for the construction of the new culture and congress center. In the following year, the voters of the city of Lucerne approved 94 million francs for the construction of a new culture and congress center. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in January 1995.
KKL Luzern Management AG was founded in 1996 to operate the house by five Lucerne personalities. The inauguration and opening of the entire building and the Lucerne Art Museum took place in 2000.
In 2001, the KKL Luzern cost 226.5 million francs according to the final construction bill, 32.5 million francs more than planned.
In 2002, Hans-Peter Aebi became Chairman of the Board of Directors of the KKL Luzern and President of the Foundation. Elisabeth Dalucas took over operational responsibility for the KKL Luzern as CEO in 2003 and became the managing director of the Foundation. At the same time, the Seebar in the KKL Luzern was reopened as a comfortable lounge. With 55.8% of the vote, the voters of the City of Lucerne approved the structural relief and operational stabilization of the KKL Luzern with 18 million francs.
In 2010, Pius Zängerle became Chairman of the Board of Directors of the KKl Luzern and President of the Foundation. In 2011, Hans E. Koch took over operational responsibility for the KKL Luzern as CEO and became the managing director of the Foundation.
The KKL Luzern received the “Swiss MICE Award 2015” in the “Congress Center” category.
More than 17 years after its opening, the KKL Luzern exceeded the billion mark in terms of added value for the first time in 2016. The KKL Luzern generated around 75 million Swiss francs in added value for the city and region of Lucerne every year, as the HSG calculated in the 2011 value added study.
In 2016, the KKL Luzern won the Swiss Location Award as “the best congress location in Switzerland”. In a total of nine categories, the most beautiful event venues in Switzerland were selected by over 4,000 visitors and organizers as well as an independent jury of experts.
On April 1, 2017, Philipp Keller took over the operational management of KKL Luzern Management AG as CEO. In 2017, the KKL Luzern launched the new branding with your modular logo and a wave of inspiration as a connecting element. The four brand values “Partner Experience”, “Perfect Hosts”, “Creative Pioneers” and “World Class Lucerne” formed the basis of the new brand positioning.
The KKL Luzern celebrated the 20th anniversary of the concert hall in 2018. For the anniversary, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under the direction of the conductor Riccardo Chailly performed for the first time with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra with Peter Oundjian on the same concert evening for the benefit of the Lucerne Music Lab.
In 2019, Markus Moll was elected by the Board of Trustees of the KKL Luzern as the new President of the Foundation for the Culture and Congress Center on the Lake. He took over the office from Markus Thumiger. Felix Howald was elected as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of KKL Luzern Management AG by the Annual General Meeting in 2019. He became the successor to Peter Mendler, who had been in office since 2015.
In 2019, the Board of Trustees approved the loan of 3.8 million Swiss francs for the renovation of the gastronomy. In spring 2020, the RED restaurant, the World Café and the Crystal Lounge were opened with new concepts.
Lucerne Symphony Orchestra
The Lucerne Symphony Orchestra is the residence orchestra of the KKL Lucerne . It was founded in 1805. The Lucerne Symphony Orchestra also functions as the opera orchestra of the Lucerne Theater. The orchestra has been under the direction of James Gaffigan since the 2011/2012 season. In recent years, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra has been a guest in well-known concert halls such as the Grosses Festspielhaus Salzburg, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Shostakovich Philharmonic in St. Petersburg and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Since 2008, the orchestra has also been running a music exchange that places a special focus on direct encounters between musicians and their audience and on cross-generational work.
