Horgau subcamp

The Horgau subcamp (NS code name: Blechschmiede Horgau ) in Horgau, north-west of Augsburg, was a subcamp of the Dachau concentration camp and, as the "Waldwerk Horgau" production facility for the Messerschmitt Me 262 aircraft .

history

The external warehouse and the forest factory of the Messerschmitt -Werke were built in the immediate vicinity of the Horgau train station on the now disused railway line between Neusäß and Welden . The branch line, also known as the “Weldenbahn”, branched off from the Augsburg – Ulm line at Neusäß station and was directly connected to the important Augsburg main station.

Because of air raids of the Allies to the Augsburger factories that tried armaments ministry , the military production outsourcing to safe places, From March 1944 Horgau has been viewed as such. The measures were carried out by the Todt organization . In cruel and humanly degrading conditions circa had 550 KZ - forced laborers , mostly of Jewish descent and skilled workers , from March 1945 until the war's end wings produced for the Messerschmitt Me 262nd

From September 1944, a warehouse was built from 21 simple wooden structures and three production buildings with concrete floors. Cranes, clamping devices and conveyor belts were available to make work easier. On March 9, 1945, 307 concentration camp prisoners from the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp arrived in Horgau. Over 20 prisoners died as a result of the work in the camp. The camp was closed at the beginning of April 1945 and the remaining 274 prisoners were transferred to the Pfersee satellite camp.

After the Americans marched in, the camp was demolished. The remains of the foundations disappeared through a spruce plantation . The old foundations were exposed again by 2011, and today they have the status of a ground monument (reference number 7530-0115).
