Cable recycling

Cable scrap

As cable recycling refers to the return of discarded power - and data cables in the material cycle . Due to the individual constituents, such as PVC , copper and aluminum take cable in the area of recycling a high priority. The aim is to conserve natural resources and implement economic benefits.

background

The electrical conductors in cables are usually made of copper , aluminum , steel , lead or silver . The material PVC is usually used as sheathing ; PA , PU , PE , PTFE (Teflon), rubber, silicone, silicone rubber, silk, epoxy, nylon and various paints are also very common . Due to the high demand for these materials in industry , cables are a main source of secondary raw materials.

Cable recycling in the construction industry

Large amounts of cable scraps, cables, sheet metal and pipes arise when buildings are demolished and are recycled ( AVV 17 04 ).

Cable recycling and the automotive industry

In the automotive industry , only 20% of scrapped vehicles are still recycled. Around 2 kilometers of cables are built into an average vehicle. With around 500,000 end-of-life vehicles annually in Germany, the approximate total length of 10 million meters of cable per year that would be ready for recycling. In 2014, according to OICA (International Automobile Manufacturers Association), the production of new cars was around 5.9 million units (see also economic figures on automobiles ). In view of the high raw material prices and increasing demand at the same time, the recycling of cables has a special position, since the raw materials have to be imported, but vehicles should be exported.

Cable recycling and the aircraft industry

The aircraft manufacturer Boeing alone recorded steady growth in sales from 2009 to 2014. In 2009, 263 orders were registered, in 2014 1,500 units were already ordered from the manufacturer. Around 275 kilometers of cables are installed in a Boeing 747 machine . When A380 from Airbus , the overall length of the internal wiring is around 500 kilometers. So far, most of the discarded machines end up in aircraft graveyards . Since wage costs usually outweigh the material value, only a small part of the valuable raw materials, especially the large amounts of cabling, has so far been returned to the material cycle.

Use of recycled materials from cables

Recycled copper and aluminum are qualitatively on a par with the lots produced directly from raw materials . The materials are important components for new cables, motors , transformers. The global demand for aluminum is increasing and so far only 30% of it is made up of recycled products.

Technical process

The removal of cables from old vehicles is time-consuming and labor-intensive and represents the main cost factor. Further processing is now fully automated; the cables are shredded to the millimeter and the shredded material is pre-separated, cleaned and melted down again with vibration sorters (so-called vibrators and shakers ) or centrifugal separators .
