Kai-Oliver Knops (born May 31, 1966 in Viersen ) is a German legal scholar .

Life

Kai-Oliver Knops comes from a family of lawyers and studied in Cologne , Trier and Heidelberg . After legal clerkship in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate and as a research assistant in the Bundeshaus (Bonn) , he initially worked at the Cologne Regional Court , later as a lawyer at the Cologne Higher Regional Court and as a specialist lawyer for banking and capital markets law at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Hamburg . In 1999 Knops received his doctorate with a thesis on real estate credit (first reviewer Peter Derleder , second reviewer Norbert Reich ). In 2007 he was charged with a thesis on the personality of the contract habilitation and received venia legendi for the subjects Civil Law , Banking Law , Capital Market Law , reorganization law , commercial law and civil procedure . From 2007 to 2009 he was research director at the Institute for Financial Services eV in Hamburg and editor of the magazine “ Konsum und Recht” . From 2008 to 2013 he was a member of the board of directors of the Hamburg consumer center . In October 2008, the University of Hamburg appointed him to the chair for civil a. Business law, in particular banking, capital market and consumer law. Before the European Court of Justice, he represents parties in fundamental questions of civil law such as in proceedings relating to so-called junk real estate . From 2011 to 2013 he was Research Director at the Hanseatic Institute for Renewable Energies. From 2013 to 2018 he was a member of the consumer advisory council at the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority .; In 2015 he was appointed as a member of the Advisory Board for Market Watchdog Finances at the vzbv and in 2016 in the joint working group of the BMJV and BMF on the subject of “prepayment penalty”. He has been a member of the SPD since 1986 , is a member of the board of the working group of social democratic lawyers in Hamburg and, since 2008, a liaison professor of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation .
