Two yearbooks specially designed for amateur astronomers and the extensive yearbook of the Heidelberg Computing Institute

The calendar for Sternfreunde , also Ahnert's Astronomical Yearbook , was an astronomical yearbook that the astronomer Paul Ahnert published for ambitious amateur astronomers for the first time in 1948 and which appeared in different forms until 2014.

history

Paul Ahnert published the calendar for Sternfreunde with the support of the Sonneberg observatory without interruption from the 1949 edition, first in the publishing houses Werden and Wachsen in Weimar and Rudolf A. Lang in Pößneck , then in the publishing house Johann Ambrosius Barth in Leipzig . In addition to explanatory texts on the extensive ephemeris in tabular form and graphical representations, the yearbooks (in A5 format, initially in paperback, from the 1983 edition in bound form) also contained current research reports from the fields of astronomy , astrophysics and astronautics . During the division of Germany, this astronomical yearbook was one of the few publications from the GDR that regularly had a loyal readership in the FRG and was equally valued by amateur and specialist astronomers in East and West.

After the anniversary edition for the 40th year in 1988, Paul Ahnert handed over the editing to the Sonneberg astrophysicist Rainer Luthardt, who also after the abolition of the German division until the 1993 edition under the title Ahnert's Calendar for Sternfreunde. Small astronomical yearbook published by Johann Ambrosius Barth Verlag Leipzig . The publishing house separated from Rainer Luthardt when the Sonneberg observatory lost its status as a publicly funded research facility in 1994 and its future as an astronomer or astrophysicist was uncertain. Rainer Luthardt wanted to continue the tradition of the astronomical yearbook associated with the Sonneberg observatory and published the Harri Deutsch Verlag Frankfurt a. M. 1994 and 1995 the Sonneberg calendar for Sternfreunde and then until 2000 the Sonneberg yearbook for Sternfreunde out.

After the takeover of Johann Ambrosius Barth Verlag Leipzig by Heidelberger Hüthig Verlag, Ahnert's calendar for Sternfreunde was published by Johann Ambrosius Barth Verlag, Hüthig GmbH, Heidelberg under the editors LD Schmadel , G. Burkhardt, S. Marx (until 1995) and Th. Neckel (from 1997). After that, the publishing house Sterne und Weltraum took over the rights to the name Ahnert in the Hüthig GmbH . The publication was continued by Th. Neckel in collaboration with O. Montenbruck.

From the 2001 edition, the yearbook, which its subscribers continued to call Ahnert , appeared under the title Ahnert's Astronomical Yearbook. Observing and understanding the sky , from 2003 published by Sterne und Weltraum, Spektrum der Wissenschaft Verlagsgesellschaft , Heidelberg. For the 2004 vintage, the format was changed from the book format A5 to the paperback magazine format A4, with a fundamentally revised and modernized layout, while the subtitle was changed to Ahnert's Astronomical Yearbook. The most important events at a glance . The subtitle was changed again with the 2010 edition, now the full title was Ahnert's Astronomical Yearbook. Observation tips for the starry sky .

The last renaming took place with the 2014 vintage. In the tradition of Paul Ahnert, the yearbook has now appeared again under the original title Calendar for Sternfreunde. Observation tips for the sky year with a different structure and new focus. This year (2014) was also the last edition of Ahnert , as the publisher decided in September 2014 not to continue the calendar for Sternfreunde as an independent product. Instead, the interstellarum - or adventure astronomy - sky almanac appeared for the next four years (2014-2018) as a short-lived successor to "Ahnert".
