Career

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1958 , he reached ninth place in the individual on the normal hill, tied with Nikolai Schamow and Nikolai Kamenski . In 1959, Kärkinen set a new hill record of 85.5 m on the Papoose Peak Jumps in Squaw Valley , which lasted for a year until the 1960 Winter Olympics . At the Four Hills Tournament 1960/61 , the only one of his career in which he participated, he reached third place in Oberstdorf and Bischofshofen . In Partenkirchen it was only enough for a 22nd place. However, he was able to win in Innsbruck and in the end finished third in the tour's overall ranking.
