Kalju Kangur

Kalju Kangur (also Kaljo , born October 25, 1925 in Vana-Kuuste, Kambja municipality , † January 15, 1989 in Tartu ) was an Estonian poet , children's book author and translator .

Life

Kangur attended the Hugo-Treffner-Gymnasium in Tartu from 1939 to 1944 and then had various positions in administration and as an accountant. He has been a freelance writer since 1955 and a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1960 .

Kangur made his debut with poems in the Postimees newspaper during the German occupation of Estonia , which caused him certain difficulties after the Second World War because it was published “in the wrong place at the wrong time”. He then published his poems in periodicals for a long time before his first book publication could appear in 1957.

Kangur's poetry is meditative and often belongs to the genre of natural poetry. The focus on strict metrical form and rhyme is striking, a link with the Arbujad , who embodied a renewal of Estonian poetry before the outbreak of World War II. He especially cultivated the form of the Italian sonnet , in general he is the Estonian poet who can put most of the sonnets in his name.

Kangur has also translated Russian poetry into Estonian.
