Kalutara ( Sinhala කඵතර දිස්ත්රික්කය kalutara distrikkaya ; Tamil களுத்துறை மாவட்டம் Kaḷuttuṟai māvaṭṭam ) is a district in the West Province in Sri Lanka . The main town is Kalutara .
geography
The Kalutara district is located on the west coast of Sri Lanka on the Gulf of Mannar and belongs to the Western Province . Neighboring districts are Colombo in the north, Ratnapura in the east, Galle in the south and the Gulf of Mannar in the west.
The Kalutara district has an area of 1598 square kilometers (of which 1576 square kilometers land and 22 square kilometers inland water). This makes it the sixth smallest district in Sri Lanka in terms of area.

According to the 2012 census, the Kalutara district has 1,221,948 inhabitants. With 775 inhabitants per square kilometer, the population density is well above the Sri Lankan average (325 inhabitants per square kilometer). Of the residents, 591,284 (48.39%) were male and 630,664 (51.61%) female. The population is very young. This is illustrated by a look at the age distribution.

District population by ethnic group
The Sinhalese make up over 85% of the total population. There are no significant minorities in four of the fourteen divisions.
Sinhalese The vast majority of the residents of Kalutara District are Sinhalese . They make up the majority of the population in all divisions. Their share ranges between 64.18% in Beruwala and 97.86% in Horana.
Moors There is also a minority of Moors or Tamil-speaking Muslims. They form large minority groups in the Beruwala (34.59%), Panadura (14.12%) and Bandaragama (11.11%) divisions, where they each exceed the ten percent mark. Their share ranges between 0.02% in Madurawala and Walallawita and 34.59% in Beruwala.
Indian Tamils The Tamils of Indian origin are a small minority. Their share only exceeds the five percent mark in the Ingiriya (7.66%), Madurawala (6.83%), Dodangoda (5.71%) and Bulathsinhala (5.16%) divisions. There are almost no Indian Tamils in the coastal areas.
Sri Lankan Tamils The Sri Lankan Tamils are only the fourth largest population group. Their share only exceeds the five percent mark in the Mathugama (6.38%), Bulathsinhala (6.37%) and Dodangoda (5.53%) divisions. Only five of the fourteen divisions have significant proportions of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Population of the district by confession
Muslims and Christians can only be found in four western divisions. In the hinterland there are isolated smaller groups of Hindus. Overall, the distribution of creeds reflects ethnic relationships. Almost all Sinhalese residents of Anuradhapura are Buddhist , while the Moors and Malays are all Islamic . The Christianity , which includes a minority of Tamils, Sinhalese and Burgher and Hinduism (majority of Tamils) are only small minority religions.

The district's population is growing rapidly. In the period from 2001 to 2012 (the last two census years) the increase was 155,709 people. This is a growth of 14.60%. Since independence, the population has increased by around 150%.

The head of the district holds the title of District Secretary. The district is further divided into thirteen divisions (under a Division Secretary). The cities and larger towns have their own administration (municipal parliament or council). There are 762 village administrations (Grama Niladharis; GN) for the 2514 villages in the entire district.
