The canton of Huanchaca is a municipality in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The canton of Huanchaca is one of five cantons in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Uyuni in the province of Antonio Quijarro . It borders on the canton of Uyuni to the west and the municipality of Tomave to the south, east and north .

The canton extends between approximately 20 ° 10 'and 20 ° 20' south latitude and 66 ° 35 'and 66 ° 44' west longitude. It measures up to seventeen kilometers from north to south and up to fourteen kilometers from west to east. In the southwestern part of the canton is the central place of the canton, Huanchaca , a Minero settlement from the 19th and 20th centuries. Century, which today still consists of twelve buildings, but is currently uninhabited. The mean altitude of the canton is 4300  m .

The canton of Huanchaca is located on the Altiplano in central Bolivia between the Cordillera de Chichas in the northeast and the Salar de Uyuni salt lake in the west.

The literacy rate among the over 19-year-olds in the municipality of Uyuni is 84 percent, namely 94 percent for men and 76 percent for women (2001).

Due to the historical population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of Uyuni 43.4% of the population speak the Quechua language .
