St. Jakob (Oberjoch)

Chapel St. Jakob - Oberjoch

St. Jakob is a chapel in Oberjoch in the Oberallgäu district .

The simple chapel is a reminder of the heavy carriage traffic in Oberjoch, as it used to take place on the top of the pass. There were three chapels on the steep ascent from the Lech Valley through the Gaichtpass as well as on Jochstrasse . Even James - the church Saints - often found on ancient trade routes, for he was the patron saint of hikers and pilgrims .

history

We only know of the very first chapel that it was demolished in 1731 and that a larger chapel was built on another site (today's). She received permission to measure on May 20, 1732 . This church, as it is still presented today, was based a little on the spatial image of the Liebenstein church. From a very old chapel there were three apses to the east, which give the now enlarged church an interior space that is not expected from the outside.

In St. Jakob in Oberjoch, the same motif was not used so strongly. The quadrangular choir is connected to semicircular niches on three sides, which are bordered at the corners by pilasters with pretty capitals.

Ceiling fresco

Ceiling fresco

The long nave with a flat barrel vault carries a ceiling fresco in a gracefully curved stucco frame: "Four pilgrims at the Jacob's fountain", above St. James the Elder , enthroned above the clouds. James, the pilgrim patron, commemorates the greatest pilgrimage of the Middle Ages to Santiago de Compostela in western Spain. At that time the St. James pilgrimage routes led from all European countries to distant Spain. Our St. James' Church and its patron indicate that the salt trade route was one of the feeder routes to the great lower Jacob's road, which ran from Geneva via southern Provence to the Pyrenees. The fresco dates from 1732.

More paintings

Apostles Jacob, Peter and Paul

The twelve apostles are painted in the hollow of the barrel vault. They were only rediscovered during the penultimate renovation in 1951/52 and represent good rural work.

Of the three framed paintings that are attached to the gallery , the two “Christ's Birth” and “Assumption of Mary” date from the first half of the 19th century; Most important is the painting on the far left from the late Baroque period. It shows St. James in the clouds, including a contemporary picture of the St. Jakob chapel in Oberjoch.

The Stations of the Cross have become a treasure , not only because of their baroque, very expressive composition, but also because of the original frames, which were only recently found again. The previous wooden sign to the west now received another porch as an entrance with a staircase.

High altar

High altar of the St. Jakob chapel in Oberjoch

The richly figured, rural-graceful high altar comes from the chapel that was demolished in 1731. The year inscription under the statue of Mary, rediscovered during the last renovation, reads: 1681. The altar is 300 years old. Its construction is in a coarser Rococo; the master carpenter of his time probably had courtly, elegant high altar solutions in front of him and simplified them to his taste. It is possible that this Oberjocher altar comes from the Vorderhindelang workshop of the Dornacher / Scholl families, from which the altar in the St. Antonius chapel in the rear village of Hinterstein may also come. The fruit hangings there on the pillars of the altar indicate connections, because they are also there in Oberjoch, but connected with angel heads. Between the two columns there is a niche with a wooden figure: Madonna and Child, above two putti. On the side under bridges crowned by vases are St. Joseph with the baby Jesus and opposite the pilgrim saint Jakobus d. Ä. Two angels with hyssop staff and spear can be seen on the segment gables, in between a bust of God the Father with the dove of the Holy Spirit. Two small putti can be found as a crown under the ray disc.

Remembrance day

In the church, July 25th is the feast day of St. James. On this day the "Bearglar kierbe " takes place annually in the St. Jakob Chapel in Oberjoch . The day of St. James has been demonstrable as a feast day for St. James the Elder, brother of the Evangelist John , since the 8th century .

Jacob's Day is a day with important weather rules :

  • "Jakobi hot - worth the effort and diligence."
  • "Jakobi clear and pure, Christmas will be frosty."
