The Kappel is a 645 meter high, wooded hill immediately north of the city of Wunsiedel in the Fichtel Mountains . The landowner is the city of Wunsiedel. The hill owes its name to a chapel that stood on the north side, on the Siechenbach , until the 15th century .

Geology and flora

The rock is gneiss , the forest cover consists of spruce and pine , forestry use is carried out by the municipal forestry company. In the past, gneiss was quarried in small quarries and used to build town houses or townhouses, as the rock was easier to break than granite. Many holes and walls still bear witness to the activity at that time. The origin of the Siechenbach is located directly north of the Kappel .

buildings

A water tank from SSW GmbH (Stadtwerke) has been on the hill since 1964, which was expanded in 1977 and now has a capacity of 800 cubic meters. The drinking water is pumped from the valley into the elevated tank and fed into the water pipes in the Wunsiedel-Nord residential area.

Markus-Zahn-Allee

At the southern foot of the Kappel, Markus-Zahn-Allee runs, starting at Bibersbacher Strasse and ending in the west after 2 km at Hofer Strasse. It is initially a public roadway, but then banned later for motorized vehicles and then a popular walking and hiking trail with views of Wunsiedel and the massif of Kösseine . The course of the Markus-Zahn-Allee is an old street. In 1499 the "escort" from Wunsiedel to Weißenstadt is mentioned in the land register of the six offices . Up until the Thirty Years' War , Weißenstädter Gasse left the city in the direction of Zeitelmoos at the upper church gate . After the Thirty Years' War one drove to Weißenstadt on Röslauer Gasse (now Biberbacher Strasse ) and then branched off in front of the Kappel forest department in the direction of Weißenstadt. In 1786 the road from Wunsiedel through Zeitelmoos and over the village of Birk to Weißenstadt was expanded as a road. In 1826 the new Hofer Straße over the Röhrberg was opened to traffic, and the Markus-Zahn-Allee lost its importance as a traffic route. At that time people drove to Bayreuth via Weißenstadt, because there were no road connections to the west through the high Fichtel Mountains, only footpaths. It was not until 1862 that the Maintalstraße was built from Bischofsgrün , the predecessor of the Fichtelgebirgsstraße / Bundesstraße 303 .

Chapel of St. Joseph

On October 3, 2007, 400 m west of the Kappel on Markus-Zahn-Allee, the St. Josef chapel was inaugurated, which is dedicated to the patron saint of carpenters. The hill (650 m above sea level) offers views of Wunsiedel, the Luisenburg-Kosseine massif, the Steinwald and far into Bohemia . In 2005, master carpenter Michael Fuchs from Wunsiedel had the idea to build a larch wood chapel with a bell tower. After initial difficulties, the location was selected, the building permit was granted by the Wunsiedler city council and sponsors were enthusiastic about the project. In 2007 the building was built and the inauguration celebrated with an ecumenical prayer.
