Traces of old ways

The Zeitelmoos is a forest area and high moor in the Fichtelgebirge ( Upper Franconia ), belongs to the natural spatial main unit Selb-Wunsiedler plateau (395) and is located between the places Wunsiedel , Hildenbach , Vordorf and Grün in the district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge .

Earlier spelling of the Zeitelmoss was "Zerrmoss", "Zerrnmooß" or "Zehrlmoss", from the 16th century also "Zeitelweyd". Zeitel means forest beekeeping ( Zeidlerei ) and moss was used for Lohen, wetlands. The Zeitelmoos is designated as a nature reserve (NSG-00351.01).

Nature reserve

Large parts of it, around 78 hectares, have been a nature reserve since 1989. The purpose of the protection is to preserve a formerly intact raised bog with its diverse regeneration stages, including the nutrient-poor, acidic waters, in order to protect the flora and fauna typical or specialized for this habitat and the soil properties, the water balance and the water properties necessary for different communities to secure.

Economic use

In the Middle Ages, forest beekeeping was carried out in Zeitelmoos, and the Zeidelgericht in Weißenstadt had to meet twice a year. Back then, farmers from Göringsreuth, Hildenbach, Birk, Vierst, Brücklas, Grün and Wunsiedel had the right to hat (pasture) for their herds of cattle in Zeitelmoos. The peat extraction for the house fire , which was carried out by the Hildenbach farmers until 1960, was not insignificant . Today forest management is carried out by the Bavarian State Forests and the city of Wunsiedel. The municipality of Röslau uses the Zeitelmoos for drinking water.

Old streets

Various old roads crisscrossed the moor area, the "Eisensteinweg" reminds of this. The local connecting road from Wunsiedel to Weißenstadt ran on it.

Waters

There are many ponds in the area . The large Zeitelmoosweiher , however, perished in the 19th century. For the Bibersbach and the Dangesbach, the area of the Zeitelmoos is the source area, although there are no clear sources.

Say

Tradition tells of all kinds of ghost figures, gnomes , gray men and moss women , who are said to have been up to mischief in Zeitelmoos, especially at night. August Kopisch dedicated the poem Zeitelmoos (“In Zeitelmoos it's not safe in the evenings ...”) to them.
