The Wunsiedler Weiher is an artificially created reservoir two kilometers south of the city of Selb in the district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge (northeast Bavaria). The pond is fed by the Lausenbach , which has its origin in the Häuselloh east of the town of Selb.
Name interpretation
Scientists interpret the name Lausenbach as deriving from luz (Lauer, hiding place). In the area around Selb there are numerous stagnant bodies of water called ponds (e.g. Langer Pond, Margrave Pond, Broad Pond, Scherschutzich or Erlteich). Why this reservoir is called a pond and why the Wunsiedler Weiher is called has not yet been clarified.
History of origin
Around the year 1485 the pond was created by the town of Wunsiedel for carp breeding by Jakob Peck. At that time it was called "Weiher an der Lausen" because it is fed by the Lausenbach. In 1499 three guilders in interest had to be paid for the pond, which was 30 days long. In 1532 the dam broke and the water caused great damage. Despite objections from the city of Selb, the brook was dammed again in 1534.
Nature reserve
The moor area around the Wunsiedler Weiher is a valuable relic of a former high moor, whose moor (peat camp) has largely been preserved. A wet biotope with flat and transitional moor as well as pipe grass meadows and borst grass meadows have developed there. The moor is also a retreat for a multitude of rare or endangered plants and animals, which is why the area was placed under nature protection in 1985 as the "Wunsiedler Weiher moorland".
