The natural forest reserve Fichtelseemoor (actually peat and sea lows) in the Fichtelgebirge in the north of the Fichtelsee is a natural forest reserve and nature reserve in Upper Franconia . The Fichtelseemoor is an important raised bog . In the relic of the last ice age , between 8,000 and 10,000 years old, a unique flora and fauna typical of the high moor has developed under the barren conditions.

Even if in the past centuries much was destroyed by drainage and the extraction of peat as fuel until after the Second World War, a large part of it has been preserved in its original form; a considerable number of rare and endangered bog-typical species could hold their own. The 139 hectare nature reserve was designated in its current size in 1982, the core areas of peat, sea and hut fleas have been under protection since 1939.

ecology

The Fichtelseemoor is one of the very few rain-fed high saddle moors in Northern Bavaria. It is located in a depression between Ochsenkopf and Platte at 752 meters above sea level. In the Fichtelseemoor you will find typical moor vegetation (e.g. peat moss, cotton grass, lingonberries, blueberries, common heather, rosemary heather). Adders and beavers can also be observed. As a special feature, the actual high moor vegetation is followed by a moor spike forest, which is extremely rare in northern Bavaria.

Renaturation

The Bavarian Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture are currently endeavoring to renaturalize some areas that were previously destroyed by peat extraction in the Bavaria 2020 Climate Program . For this purpose, the drainage network is filled in to rewet the areas and activate the ecological cycles in the bog. The reason is not least the fact that intact peatlands can store up to 50 tons of carbon dioxide per hectare and year.
