The Platte is a 885 m high mountain in the Bavarian High Fichtel Mountains .
Location and surroundings
The plate is located in the southern Schneeberg massif in the Upper Franconian district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtel Mountains on the Rhine-Elbe watershed . Nearby places are Fichtelberg in the west and Tröstau in the east. The Bavarian state owns the land.
nature
The summit area consists of a huge block pile made of angular granite slabs, rare mosses and lichens colonize the rock debris. The area is designated as a nature reserve with 4.1 hectares . Below the summit the mountain is covered with coniferous forest. Forest management is carried out by the Bavarian State Forests, Fichtelberg Forestry Company.
Surname
The slab was first mentioned in a document in 1393 as "die plancken" in a description of the rain of the forest, which at that time belonged to the burgrave of Nuremberg. The mountain got its name because of the plate-like summit area.
Geotope
The sea of blocks at the summit is designated as a valuable geotope by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (geotope number: 479R025).
tourism
The Höhenweg and the Fränkische Gebirgsweg lead from the Silberhaus (part of the municipality of Tröstau on the federal road 303 - Fichtelgebirgsstraße / E48) to the summit. From the highest point with a wooden cross there are excellent views of the Wunsiedler basin with the Leupoldsdorfer Seenplatte in the foreground, southeast to the Hohen Matze , the Kosseine , the Steinwald , north to the Waldstein and the Kornberg .
