The federal highway 303 (abbreviation: B 303 ) is a German federal highway in Bavaria , which leads through the eastern Lower Franconia as well as the entire Upper Franconia . It runs from west to east, starting on the B 7 west of Schweinfurt and ending on the border with the Czech Republic east of Schirnding .

history

The original route of Reichsstraße 303 led from Schweinfurt via Schonungen , Hofheim in Lower Franconia , Coburg , Mitwitz , Kronach , Selbitz to Hof and on via Rehau and Eger to Mitterteich . In 1941, the section from Hof via Eger to Mitterteich was replaced by Reichsstraße 15 and later the section from Hundsbach (border) to Mitterteich was replaced by the B 299 . At the beginning of the 1950s, the route from Marktrodach via Stadtsteinach , Bad Berneck , Marktredwitz and Arzberg to Schirnding was redefined as federal highway 303. This section was previously called Maintalstrasse .

The middle part of the B 303 between Schonungen am Main and Tambach near Coburg originally ran through 14 villages. In the 1960s to 1990s, sections of the route were relocated eastwards over a total length of 49.7 km, and since then there have been through-towns in Oberelldorf and Tambach. Near Ebersdorf bei Coburg , the B 303 has been crossing the new A 73 (Nuremberg - Suhl) at junction 10 since October 19, 2007 .

Since 2015, the federal road between the Schweinfurt-West junction of the A 71 and the beginning of the Schweinfurt through-traffic has been subject to tolls for trucks.

Fichtelgebirgsautobahn

There were plans to rebuild the Wirsberg- Eger section into a four-lane “ yellow motorway ”, the so-called “Fichtelgebirgsautobahn”. There it should connect to the Czech D6 motorway to Prague. However, these plans have not been pursued further since January 2009 due to the expected high environmental pollution, high construction costs and decreasing traffic figures. In return, the existing B 303 is to be expanded selectively.

A start is now to be made between the Marktredwitz-West junction and the Czech border, as provided for in the requirement plan for the federal highways, with two lanes and four lanes. This is the result of a conversation between Interior Minister Herrmann, Federal Transport Minister Peter Ramsauer, former State Secretary. D. Willi Müller and District Administrator Karl Döhler on May 17, 2010. Step one should be the further expansion of the Schirnding bypass, which is already three lanes, and for which building permits already exist.

At the beginning of 2010, the head of the building authority in Bayreuth called for the connection from Schirnding to Marktredwitz to be reduced to three lanes. Interior Minister Herrmann made it clear, however, that the previous standard with two lanes in each direction would be retained.

According to information from opponents of the expansion, the B 303 project was only included in the old federal transport route plan because the documents submitted contained incorrect figures for construction costs and maintenance. According to the opponents, this error persists despite repeated reports (2003, 2007) and although those responsible admitted the error and promised to correct it.

On November 11, 2010, Federal Transport Minister Peter Ramsauer announced the current changes in the requirements plan for transport projects. With regard to the subject of federal highways, he did not notice any changes in the requirement plan. Since only some of the projects contained in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan can be financed, the Free State of Bavaria must prioritize in the case of the B 303.

Usually, three-lane roads on both sides are sufficient nationwide for significantly more traffic (example B 169 or B 16 ). The current official traffic figures, measured at the two permanent counting stations on the B 303 near Schirnding and Bischofsgrün, show an increase in traffic since 2014: At Schirnding, traffic has increased by over 1,000 to around 5,846 vehicles per day compared to 2010. In Bischofsgrün-Rangen the numbers show an increase of 200 to 5,687 vehicles per day for three years. The 168 km long Czech motorway D 6 to Prague, which follows the B 303 and is only about halfway up today (as of January 2017), is to be expanded in stages until 2029. This can increase the attractiveness of the B 303 for transit traffic in the coming years.

Fichtelgebirgsstrasse

The section of the B 303 called Fichtelgebirgsstraße - named after the Fichtelgebirge in northeastern Bavaria, which it crosses - begins at the motorway exit of the A 9 Bad Berneck ( district of Bayreuth ) and goes to the state border at Schirnding ( district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge ). The Fichtelgebirgsstraße is both European Route 48 and a section of the European Castle Road .

Course of the road

Watershed at the Seehaus parking lot below the lake hill

After starting at the A 9 near Bad Berneck, it runs in an easterly direction through the valley of the White Main , past the climatic site Bischofsgrün and Karches to the Seehaus car park. There it crosses the European main watershed between the North Sea and the Black Sea and reaches 777 m above sea level. NN its highest point, leads to the Silberhaus (municipality of Tröstau) and goes right through Tröstau. It then runs past Wunsiedel , Marktredwitz , Seußen , Arzberg at the foot of the Kosseine-Luisenburg and comes to the state border to the Czech Republic near Schirnding. In the last few decades, the road has been expanded in various sections to be localized, free of intersections or to have three lanes; since the border was opened in 1990 it has become a heavily frequented trunk road.

history

A paved road connection between Berneck and Wunsiedel, called Maintalstraße , was first created in 1862. Previously there was only the old road between Eger and Gefrees via Weißenstadt and the Höllpass about 5 km north of Bischofsgrün as an east-west long-distance connection through the Fichtel Mountains . A further expansion was started in the “Third Reich” as part of the overall project “Ostmarkstrasse” , but the original plan was not implemented. The route for the route from Hof through the Gau Bayrische Ostmark to Passau was relocated due to the Berlin-Munich motorway; Starting from the already existing Maintalstrasse, the plan was to go south past Marktredwitz , across the Steinwald to Erbendorf , Weiden and continue towards Passau. From 1937 the expansion of the Wunsiedel  - Bad Berneck section began; work was stopped in 1941 because of the Second World War . The section from Erbendorf to Sichersreuth near Marktredwitz was no longer realized after 1938; the Ostmarkstrasse (today's B 22 ) now led from Erbendorf via Kemnath to the Gau capital Bayreuth .
