Landscape and history

Monument to the abandoned chapel on the Kappelberg

The name Kappelberg comes from a pilgrimage chapel that was demolished in 1819. While the highest areas of the mountain are forested, there are vineyards on its mountain slopes. The wine-growing areas are mainly determined by the members of the wine cooperative fur Weingärtner managed. On the Kappelberg there are remains of a fortress from prehistoric times secured by ramparts and ditches .

Protected areas

On the southern slope below the ridge is the Kappelberg nature reserve , which stretches as a striking band of heather in a strip between forest and vineyards. The NSG with the protected area number 1.064 was formed by ordinance of the Stuttgart Regional Council of June 22, 1978 with a size of 2.0 hectares. The main protection purpose is the preservation of the steppe heather slope, which is unique in its floristic and faunistic biodiversity for the Stuttgart area.
