Cardinal von Galen School in Meppen

The Cardinal von Galen School is a secondary school in the Emsland district town of Meppen . The school currently has around 500 students , 48% of whom are girls. The students are taught by almost 50 teachers .

The school is located on Wichernstrasse in the Neustadt of Meppen. It has an auditorium and a gym . The model of the school is the German bishop and Cardinal Clemens August Graf von Galen .

history

The school was built in the spring of 1961 in the Neustadt in Meppen. The topping-out ceremony took place on May 5, 1962 , as a sign that the building had been completed. In the same year, the ninth grade was set up with students from Meppen-Neustadt, Bokeloh , Hemsen and Helte .

The school was finally inaugurated on December 17, 1962. On January 31, 1963, it was decided that the school should take its name. In 1965 it was decided that the school would henceforth be a primary and secondary school . The application for the independence of the two schools, the Overberg School and the Cardinal von Galen School, was also approved.

On December 3, 1965, the school became a public elementary school for students of the Catholic Confession. From 1963 to 1968, Mr. Krause then headed the school. In 1986, today's high school was expanded by four classrooms , and the students from Bokeloh and Helte also attend the school from the fifth grade onwards. From 1969, Vice-Rector Migura took over the post of headmaster , replacing Rector Krause. The funding level was established in 1971. From 1976 the school became a community school. In 2004 the school's sports hall was built, which was inaugurated on May 20, 2005. On August 13, 2012 the time had come: the school became a high school. The current headmistress since August 2013 is Melanie Esser. The last expansion took place in 2017: a music class is added.

Mission statement

Clemens August Graf von Galen, born on March 16, 1878, comes from the old Westphalian noble family von Galen. In 1904 von Galen was ordained a priest , in 1933 a bishop and in 1946 a cardinal. He is known to posterity as Cardinal von Galen (KvG).

Today the person of Galen and his work are valued very differently. He was a typical national-conservative representative of the elites of the Empire , who opposed the Weimar constitution . His statements about the two world wars are particularly questionable.

On the other hand, von Galen is seen by a broad public as an opponent of the Nazi regime . He has become known beyond the borders of Germany in particular through three sermons he gave in 1941 . In these sermons he denounced Germany, led by Hitler , because it violated fundamental human rights, and he called for resistance to euthanasia (the murder of the sick and disabled). The Nazi leadership did not dare to arrest him because they feared a riot in the Catholic Münsterland .

After von Galen's death in 1946, many squares, streets and schools were named after Cardinal von Galen , as one wanted to honor him as a courageous man of resistance.
