The Karel Doorman class or M-class (M for multi purpose ) is a class of guided missile frigates of the Royal Netherlands Navy . The eight ships of the class entered service in the first half of the 1990s. Since 2004 six of the ships have been sold to other countries.

history

Planning and construction

The ships of the Karel Doorman class were planned from 1977 to replace the obsolete submarine hunt ships of the Roofdier class (predator class) from the Second World War . The Dutch Navy placed greater emphasis on survivability, so ships should receive a reduced radar, sonic and infrared signature. In 1984 it became clear that the frigates of the Van Speijk class needed an up-to-date replacement, so it was decided to equip the new frigates with both anti-aircraft and anti- submarine capabilities. The first ship of the class, the Karel Doorman , was laid down at Royal Schelde in Vlissingen on February 26, 1985 ; it was launched on April 20, 1988, and commissioned on May 31, 1991. The remaining seven ships in the class followed by 1995.

In 1997 all ships were equipped with better Scout navigation radars from Thales Nederlands .

sale

Because of their wide range of possible uses, navies from other countries also showed an early interest in the frigates. After long negotiations, two ships were sold to the Navy of Chile in 2004 . They entered service in 2005. In 2005, two frigates went to the Belgian Navy for a total of 296.6 million US dollars . The ships have been in service since 2007. In May 2006, Portugal first showed interest in buying two ships to replace the two outdated João Belo class ships . The contract worth 240 million euros was concluded in November of the same year, and the ships were handed over to the Portuguese Navy in early 2009 and 2010, respectively . The second ship finally arrived in its new home port for the first time on March 9, 2010.

technology

Hull and drive

The frigates of the Karel Doorman class are 122.25 meters long, 14.4 meters wide and with a maximum displacement of 3320 tons have a draft of 6.05 meters. The drive, a CODOG system consists of two diesel engines Stork-Wartsila 12SW280 each with 4900 hp for cruise trips to 21 knots and two gas turbines Rolls-Royce Spey SM1C each with 17,000 horsepower, which accelerate the ships on their top speed of 30 knots. The range is 5000 nautical miles at 19 knots.

Armament and Electronics

Primary armament of the vessels is a 16-cell Vertical Launching System Mark 49 for RIM-7 Sea Sparrow - antiaircraft missiles and two quadruple starter for AGM-84 Harpoon - anti-ship missile . The 76 mm gun from Oto Melara on the foredeck can also be used against sea and air targets . Of approaching for guided missiles, aircraft and approaching small sea targets is on the astern attachments a Goalkeeper - close-in weapon system installed. The Westland Lynx helicopter stationed on the quarterdeck and Mk. 46 torpedoes , which can be ejected from four torpedo tubes, can be used against submarines .

The battlefield reconnaissance is carried out using an LW 08 wide-area air reconnaissance radar , a SMART-S-3D sea surveillance / fire control radar and a PHS-36 bow sonar . The ships also have a Thomson Marconi (now Thales ) Anaconda DSBV 61 towing sonic . A Scout LPI navigation radar supports navigation at sea. The data processing takes place through the VII system Signaal SEWACO with Link-11 data connection and satellite communication . The fire control data are passed on to two Signal-STIR fire control radars.

Modernizations

Between 2008 and 2010, the Belgian naval component had the Louise-Marie and then the Léopold I converted at the Damen shipyard in Vlissingen with a view to future use of the NH90 on - board helicopters . The flight deck was reinforced and extended by 1.4 m, so that the area increased from 82.62 m² to 90.18 m². The hangar was also extended by 1.50 m and the gates increased by 80 cm. A Rexroth operating system was also set up.

Between September 2010 and the beginning of 2014, the Dutch Navy further modernized the four remaining units in Den Helder in the two Benelux countries. This modernization included both hardware and software changes. The ships will have a new mast configuration with a surface search and surveillance radar Thales Seastar (X-band), an air and surface search radar Smart-S F-Mk 1 3D (F-band) and a STIR fire control radar (I- / J- / K band). In addition, an electro-optical / infrared (EO / IR) operating 360 ° gatekeeper surface search and monitoring system is being installed.

As part of this program, the two Dutch frigates also received the necessary modifications for NH-90 operations. They should receive a few more modernizations, including a new low-frequency active and passive sonar.
