Karel Vaněk

Karel Vaněk (born March 17, 1887 in Černý Kostelec , Bohemia , Austria-Hungary ; died July 18, 1933 in Prague ) was a Czech journalist and writer .

Life

Karel Vaněk was a columnist and writer of cheerful newspaper articles, which he also published in edited volumes. During the First World War he was a soldier on the Eastern Front . After the war he worked for the communist newspaper Rudé právo and the weekly Pražský ilustrovaný zpravodaj (Prague illustrated reporter). Vaněk was friends with Jaroslav Hašek . When he suddenly died in 1923 while working on the multi-part novel The good soldier Schwejk , Vaněk was commissioned by the publisher Synek to complete the fourth part. Vaněk's The Adventures of the Good Soldier Schwejk in Russian Captivity was published in 1923 and, like the other volumes, was illustrated by Josef Lada . Vaněk's style differs from Hašek's and his sense of humor is judged to be “rough”.

Karel Vaněk died of tuberculosis in 1933.

Hašek and Vaněk's books were burned in the German Reich in 1933 .
