Karel Vinck

Karel Vinck (born September 19, 1938 in Aalst ) is a Belgian businessman .

Life

Vinck graduated from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven ( Leuven , Belgium) with a Masters in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. He also has an MBA from Cornell University ( Ithaca , United States ).

Act

Karel Vinck started his career at Eternit in 1971 and after a short time became managing director of the Italian branch. From 1978 he took this position for the entire company.

From 1985 to 1994 he was CEO of the Belgian metalworking company Bekaert .

In 1995 he worked for Union Minière , where he led the company's restructuring. Since October 17, 1994 he was a member of the Board of Directors of Union Minière / Umicore, from 2002 to 2009 as its chairman. Around 2003 he was also chairman of the board of directors of the Belgian copper smelter Cumerio , honorary chairman of the Flemish employers' association (VEV) and president of the Flemish council for science policy. At this time he was also represented on the supervisory boards of Suez - Tractebel , the Tessenderlo Group, the Catholic University of Leuven and at the Brussels opera house Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie .

From 2002 to January 2005 he headed the National Company of the Belgian Railways (SNCB). In the course of this he also held the office of President of the Community of European Railways (CER).

From July 2005 to December 2018 he was European coordinator for the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) at the European Commission . Matthias Ruete was his successor as coordinator .

Varia

In 1994 the readers of Trends magazine voted him Manager of the Year.

Vinck was sentenced to three years in prison in 2006, along with other executives from Eternit Italy, for involuntary manslaughter in Italy for grossly neglecting the health risks associated with working with asbestos. In 2009, the Catania Court of Appeal overturned this decision and acquitted him on the case. Karel Vinck said he was unaware at the time that asbestos could cause cancer.

Vinck was awarded the European Railway Award in 2012.
