Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic

The Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic , or Karelian ASSR for short, KASSR for short, was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Russian Federative Socialist Soviet Republic (RSFSR) within the Soviet Union . The capital was Petrozavodsk . Around 800,000 people live in the 172,400 square kilometer area. It was right on the border with Finland . After the Finnish independence in 1917 in formed Soviet Russia remaining East Karelia on July 25, 1923, the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (ASSR) . From March 31, 1940, the former ASSR as Karelo-Finnish SSR was an independent Union republic of the Soviet Union because the Soviet Union annexed parts of Finland and incorporated them into the ASSR. On July 16, 1956, the area was re-incorporated into the Russian SFSR. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Republic of Karelia emerged within Russia.
