Karen Vogtmann
Karen Lee Vogtmann (born July 13, 1949 in Pittsburg (California) ) is an American mathematician who deals with algebra and topology.
Vogtmann studied at the University of California, Berkeley , where she received her bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1971 and her PhD with John Wagoner in 1977 ( homology stability of ). She then went to the University of Michigan , Brandeis University and Columbia University . She has been at Cornell University since 1984 , where she has been a full professor since 1994.
Vogtmann dealt with geometric group theory , group cohomology and low-dimensional topology . Together with Marc Culler, she introduced the term outer space in 1986 in the geometric theory of the group of external automorphisms of a free group (as simplicial complexes on which these groups act). The theory has applications in the study of phylogenetic trees in the theory of evolution and connections to the theory of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras (discovered by Maxim Lwowitsch Konzewitsch , but also examined by Vogtmann).
In 2007 she was a Noether Lecturer . In 2006 she was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Madrid (The cohomology of automorphisms groups of free groups). From 2003 to 2006 she was Vice President of the American Mathematical Society , of which she is a fellow. In 2014 she received a Wolfson Research Merit Award from the Royal Society and received the Humboldt Research Award . In 2016 she gave a plenary lecture at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin (The topology and geometry of automorphism groups of free groups). In 2018 Vogtmann was awarded the Pólya Prize of the London Mathematical Society .
