Karen Lea Wynn Fonstad (born April 18, 1945 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma , † March 11, 2005 in Oshkosh , Wisconsin ) was an American writer and cartographer. She gained fame through the publication of several atlases on fictional worlds, such as the "Historical Atlas of Middle-earth ", the setting for an epic fantasy story by the English author JRR Tolkien .

biography

Karen Wynn Fonstad was the daughter of Estis and James Wynn, who had two daughters and two sons in addition to her. On March 21, 1970 she married Todd A. Fonstad from Oshkosh, whom she had met while studying and with whom she had children Mark and Kristina (now her name is Kristina Stingle).

She graduated from Norman High School in Norman , Oklahoma. This was followed by a Bachelor of Science degree in physiotherapy and a master's degree in geography . She eventually specialized in cartography at the University of Oklahoma.

Wynn Fonstad worked as a freelance cartographer and lecturer at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh. She was involved in this community for 24 years both politically (in the local council and citizens' committee) and culturally (Opera House Board of Directors). Since 1974 she has been an active member of the Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church.

Fonstad died on March 11, 2005 of complications from breast cancer .
