Wille Karhumaa (born June 7, 2000 in Oulu ) is a Finnish Nordic combined athlete .

Career

Karhumaa, who starts for the Ounasvaara Ski Club, made his international debut on January 16, 2016 in his home town of Ruka in the Continental Cup , but missed the points. At the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer one month later, he finished eighth. He also showed a good performance at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2016 in Râșnov and achieved thirteenth place in the Gundersen singles over 10 kilometers and 24th in the sprint over 5 kilometers. Together with Atte Korhonen , Mikko Hulko and Eero Hirvonen , he also won the bronze medal with the relay.

About a year after his Continental Cup debut, Karhumaa again reached the points for the first time in Ruka. He achieved his best result of the season at the end of January 2017 with thirteenth place in Otepää . In the overall Continental Cup ranking it was enough for thirty points and 66th place. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2017 in Park City , Karhumaa took a middle position and also with the team he came in fourth compared to last year.

Karhumaa was allowed to start the winter of 2017/18 in the Finnish World Cup team. On his debut in Ruka he finished in 33rd place and at the second station in Lillehammer it was not enough for the first World Cup points. Therefore, Karhumaa competed in the Continental Cup again in the following weeks before taking part in the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships for the third time in early February 2018 . However, he only finished 41st in the sprint in Kandersteg and was only sixth in the relay.

In the summer of 2018 Karhumaa made her debut in the Grand Prix in Oberwiesenthal , but was unable to collect any points in any of the three appearances. In the Continental Cup 2018/19 he consistently achieved the points, but stayed away from the top in this lower class competition series. This was also clear at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Lahti in 2019 , when he crossed the finish line in the sprint with a clear gap and had to be satisfied with 23rd place.

At the beginning of winter 2019/20 Karhumaa won his first medal at the Finnish championships in Rovaniemi . A week later he was part of the Finnish team for the season opener of the World Cup in Ruka. After missing the points in the first two competitions, he won his first five World Cup points in the final competition of the Ruka Tour from the Rukatunturi hill and over ten kilometers after a strong mileage.
