Detailed memorial texts

Franklinstrasse 25 in Dresden is one of the few (probably three) houses built before 1945 in the so-called American Quarter between the railway line and Reichenbachstrasse. In contrast to the neighboring noble Swiss quarter, a characteristic Wilhelminian style quarter was created here in the late 19th century, mostly in block perimeter development. Apart from that, many design elements from the time of construction have been preserved on the historicizing facades and especially in the stairwell of the striking corner building, which make it appear as an important structural testimony to the development of architecture in the early days. After the renovation, which took place before 2010, it shows the former structure of the street fronts through plaster grooves on the ground floor, on the building edges, the corner of the house and in the form of diamond coatings on the parapet areas of the piano nobile. The property of a monument thus results from its importance in terms of building history and urban development history (LfD / 2007).

on the Mitschuringarten: In 1955 Werner Bauch, professor of landscape architecture at the TH Dresden, designed a Mitschuringarten for the workers and farmers faculty of the Technical University. It was a teaching and experimental garden that enabled a form of teaching that combined biological research and gardening in accordance with the unity of theory and practice sought by the GDR Ministry of Public Education. The garden was laid out on the basis of the “Instructions for the creation of Mitschuring Gardens” published by the AG Mitschuring Gardens and had demonstration areas, practice areas for the students and special areas on which ecological influences on plant communities were shown. Although the Mitschuringarten at Weberplatz is no longer used as such, important elements of the design are still preserved and legible today: in addition to the path system, there are two vivariums, the remains of a greenhouse, the soil models and retaining walls in the southern area, as well as a large number of trees. As a work by Werner Bauch, the Mitschuringarten is of artistic significance. It illustrates a pedagogical approach that was only propagated for a short period of time (1951–1956) in the GDR and is therefore also of significance in terms of garden history. As the only known Mitschuring species in Saxony, it is also a rarity (LfD / 2018).

The Andreas-Schubert-Bau on Zellescher Weg in Dresden, built between 1959 and 1960, is an important document for the change in GDR architecture around 1960 from the style of national building traditions to a contemporary style. The functional university building by Helmut Fischer and Heinz Stoll with its towering grid facades is reminiscent of the early phase of modern post-war architecture in Western Europe at the end of the 1950s. The steel skeleton construction of the rectangular main building with flat roof and functional structure is made visible on the unadorned fronts by transverse and vertical concrete girders and supports. The lower lecture hall building with entrance area appears to the side and slightly offset. The expansion of the Technical University in Dresden, which has been a university since 1961, into a "cadre forge" of socialism was promoted by the GDR government. In addition to the reconstruction of the old campus, numerous new buildings were built, such as the Andreas Schubert Building. This forms a striking structural testimony to the GDR architecture, which, in addition to the generally frowned-upon »plate«, also produced something sophisticated in terms of design and unmistakable urban planning (LfD / 2019).

After research in Dresden's historical address books, the post office 32 at Bergstrasse 56 in Dresden, OT Südvorstadt-West was built between 1918 and 1919. After completion, the German Reich (Reichspost and Telegraphenverwaltung) appears as the owner. The Dresden-Süd telephone sub-office was also located in the striking building. Apart from its historical significance as an example of the objectified architecture after 1900, the object to be assessed here is an important document for the German postal system around 1920. In the course of the establishment of the Reich in 1871, a postal law was created which regulated duties and postal services for all parts of the country. The final point of this development was the monopoly of the Reichspost , because in 1899 all other commercially operated post-like facilities were banned. Improvements and innovations in the postal system, apart from Bavaria and Württemberg, where a state post office existed until 1920, came from an authority. Apart from that, during this development all cities in the country were given mostly representative official buildings up to the First World War. The Reich Ministry of Post had an independent department with construction officials for such tasks. The date of origin of the object to be assessed here indicates that it was planned during the imperial era (LfD / 2016).

The villa building erected in 1914 on the corner of Bernhardstrasse and Bayreuther Strasse is a two-story, free-standing building with a high hipped roof. The garden side is enlivened by an extension over a polygonal floor plan. There are also two extensions on the northwest side and the southeast side, each with modern glazed roofs. These are to be partially removed during the upcoming renovation in 2010/2011. Originally, the striking building was structured on three sides by a cornice. Most of the upstairs windows had shutters. The front facing Bayreuther Straße showed those blind arches typical of the time. In addition, accentuating decorative and structuring elements were found, as the preserved building files show. This shows that the construction management was in the hands of Fr (iedrich) Brauer, while Curt Reimer was responsible for the execution. Furthermore, the name of the builder Iwan Schlotte appears, to whom a later partial renovation probably goes back. Inside the villa, most of the furnishings, especially on the mezzanine floor, have been preserved. Here, the rooms are enlivened by stucco décor, parquet, wall paneling, built-in cupboards, a fireplace, heating panels and a marble water basin. In addition, the windows from the time they were built appear remarkable. The house, which was built for a family, is similar in design to the Villa Kaufmann at Bahnhofstrasse 25 in the Niedersedlitz district. The building, built between 1911 and 1912 by the Lossow & Kühne office, has a comparable façade structure with blind arches on the mezzanine floor and cornice on the upper floor. The property's status as a monument results from the architectural and artistic importance of the preserved interior of the villa. This is highly demanding in terms of design and a testimony to the interior design at the beginning of the 20th century that is worth preserving. At the same time, it is a rarity, as only a few residential buildings of this time have preserved such features (LfD / 2014).
  8. a b c d e court complex (formerly), today university, consisting of the actual courthouse with several wings on Georg-Schumann-Strasse, Münchner Platz, George-Bähr-Strasse and Helmholtzstrasse (Georg-Schumann-Bau and Tillich-Bau) , the former remand prison grouped to the southeast with a cross-shaped floor plan (Hülsse-Bau); The property of a monument results from the architectural-historical, historical, artistic and urban development meaning, i.e. the documentary value especially for architecture at the beginning of the 20th century, the importance for the interpretation of an event and the memorial value, the court was primarily the place of persecution of opponents of National Socialism, the design quality with which the system appeals to the aesthetic perception of a viewer in particular and the importance for the environment and the townscape.
  9. Monument text
The stately tenement building at Helmholtzstrasse 1 in Dresden, OT Südvorstadt-West, originally part of a closed development on Münchner Strasse, was built in 1904 and is located in a district north of the TU campus, which characterizes several comparable buildings in open and closed development. It is bounded by Münchner Strasse, Hettner Strasse, George-Bähr-Strasse and Helmholtzstrasse. Design and execution were in the hands of the architect and builder Karl Böhme. The four-storey tenement house with a natural stone facade appears to be an extremely representative, historicizing residential building with a tower extension and multifaceted facades with cornices and two-storey front balconies. As was already typical at this time, the décor, which was objectified, shows design elements that were borrowed from various styles from the Romanesque to the Baroque in an ecletical sense. Accordingly, there are round arch friezes, arched curtain windows, fittings and mirrors on the fronts. In terms of the overall impression, the older epochs dominate, especially the Gothic, with curved baroque elements also showing up in the details, especially on the entrance door. The object to be assessed here is therefore a remarkable and impressive structural testimony to historicism around and after 1900, which explains its importance in terms of architectural history. Historicism was the dominant architectural style in Germany from around 1830 to the beginning of the 20th century. Employees of what was then the Technical University of Dresden (now the Technical University) also lived in the spacious apartments in the houses between Münchner Strasse, Hettner Strasse, George-Bähr-Strasse and Helmholtzstrassees. In addition to its architectural significance, Helmholtzstrasse 1 also has artistic value. The rich decoration particularly appeals to the aesthetic sensibility of a beholder and lifts the building from 1904 out of the mass of those buildings that were built around this time (apart from the quarter described above). The maintenance of Helmholtzstrasse 1 in Dresden, OT Südvorstadt-West is also in the public interest. Such elaborate historicist buildings are recognized as monuments by both the population and specialist circles. In addition, an object is worth preserving just because of its artistic value within the meaning of the law (LfD / 2019).
  10. Monument text
As a historicist residential building from the late 19th century, the villa is historically significant. The small automobile garage built in 1910 at the instigation of the then client, Director Rudolf Liebig, and the main thing, the villa, form a unit of monument value. Apart from that, this is a striking and exemplary example of the architecture of its time, even if only an auxiliary building.
  11. Monument
text The above-mentioned Villa Hübnerstraße 8 in Dresden, OT Südvorstadt-West is a cultural monument that is important in terms of architectural and urban development and its preservation is of public interest. The single-storey house with an extended mansard roof , a two-storey central projection and a side tower extension was built in 1897–1898. The client was the factory owner and consul Gustav-Richard Tiedemann. The architectural historical significance of the striking factory owner's villa resting on a massive base results from the testimony value for the architecture of historicism in the second half of the 19th century. It shows a variety of design elements that were typical for this style. In addition to triangular gables, there are elaborate window frames, profiles and wooden trim. The building was probably expanded years later, as indicated by the two-story section at the rear. Apart from that, Hübnerstrasse 8 is a characteristic example of the villa building task, which played an important role in those days, industrialization and the early days of the company. In addition, Hübnerstraße 8 belongs to the so-called Swiss Quarter, the oldest, still preserved villa district in the city of Dresden, which explains the importance of the property to be assessed here in terms of urban development history. If someone named the Swiss Quarter as their residential address around 1900, that raised them in the eyes of others. The district southwest of the main train station was an elegant, even elitist, residential area until 1945. Individual houses in beautiful gardens, i.e. the construction of real villas, were prescribed throughout the area. The public interest in preservation of Villa Hübner Strasse 8 in Dresden, OT Südvorstadt-West results primarily from the fact that such properties are recognized as cultural monuments by a wide range of experts and the population (LfD / 2015).
