The Reichenbachstraße is a 1.5-kilometer city road in Dresden district Südvorstadt . It is named after Ludwig Reichenbach (1793–1879), a Dresden natural scientist, zoologist and botanist.

location

Reichenbachstraße connects the two arterial roads Fritz-Löffler-Straße ( Bundesstraße 170 ) and Teplitzer Straße (former Bundesstraße 172 , today Staatsstraße 172 ). It begins in the Südvorstadt-West district and then crosses the Südvorstadt-Ost district in a south-easterly direction.

The house numbering starts at the western end of the street at the intersection between Bergstrasse and Rugestrasse. Just a few meters further east, Winckelmannstraße joins Reichenbachstraße. Also just a little to the east is the traffic light-controlled intersection with the two-lane, four-lane Fritz-Löffler-Straße. Then Reichenbachstrasse continues straight through an area of mainly grid-shaped access roads to Ackermannstrasse. It crosses Hochschulstrasse , Andreas-Schubert-Strasse, Hauffstrasse, Uhlandstrasse, Gutzkowstrasse, "Am Beutlerpark" / Franklinstrasse, "Am Beutlerpark" / Semperstrasse and Geinitzstrasse. After the intersection with Ackermannstraße, Reichenbachstraße describes a left-hand bend, on the right-hand side of which Weberplatz is located and then joins Teplitzer Straße at right angles.

Reichenbachstrasse is one of three west-east connecting roads between the two arterial routes B 170 and S 172 in Dresden's Südvorstadt. Located to the north is the Strehlener road between Friedrich-List-Platz and Strehlener Place , south connects Reichenbachstraße the cell Esche way the Fritz-Foerster-Platz with the Teplice street. The Schnorrstraße also runs largely parallel to Reichenbachstraße, but with interruptions or another name.

history

Reichenbachstrasse was laid out in connection with the American Quarter and initially formed its southern boundary. In 1879 the street got its name, which is still used today. The north side was built on mostly five-storey residential and commercial buildings, often in Art Nouveau style and with a closed construction. On the south side of the street, villas and one to two family houses were built in open development in the 1930s.

The air raids on Dresden on February 13, 1945 destroyed the American Quarter and with it a large part of the development north of Reichenbachstrasse, while the southern area up to Zellescher Weg was largely spared. Reconstruction began in the 1950s with buildings for the University of Transport (HfV) on what would later become Friedrich-List-Platz. A student dormitory (Reichenbachstrasse 35–39) and a cafeteria for the HfV students were built in 1957/58 .

Development

Reichenbachstraße is mainly open-plan , with the western half of the street increasingly being used for public and commercial purposes, while the eastern half is mainly used for residential purposes.

Refectory building Reichenbachstrasse 1

The student dormitory at Fritz-Löffler-Straße 16 , built in the 1950s, is located at the intersection with Fritz-Löffler-Straße , then Reichenbachstraße passes the ten-story apartment block along Hochschulstraße. On the north side is the listed cafeteria building, which was built for the HfV and today belongs to the Dresden University of Applied Sciences (HTW). The four-storey building in the New Objectivity style bears the address Reichenbachstrasse 1. On the opposite side are the school grounds of the 117th elementary school and east of Andreas-Schubert-Strasse the 46th secondary school .

Town houses in the Lukas area

Opposite the secondary school is the Lukasareal built between 1999 and 2005 with 39 row houses and four town houses on an area of 11,000 square meters . It is considered a successful example of modern inner-city residential construction and as such was awarded the building price of the city of Dresden.

On the corner of Reichenbachstrasse and Uhlandstrasse, the Christian Community built the Johannes Church in 1999 as its Dresden community center. Between 1936 and 1941 the community had its church, which was destroyed in the war in 1945, on Reichenbachstraße. The following section from Reichenbachstraße to Gutzkowstraße is characterized by the Reichenbachstraße student residence with the Gutzkowclub, one of the thirteen student clubs in Dresden. From the Beutlerpark onwards , the street is mainly flanked by detached single houses and villas. Exceptions are a residential complex completed in 2006 and the building of the former district hygiene institute at Beutlerpark, which was built in 1933 as a hospital of the Albertverein and rebuilt after war damage.

The eastern end of Reichenbachstrasse is formed by the Weberplatz building complex of the TU Dresden , which was built between 1906 and 1910 .

traffic

Reichenbachstrasse is mainly used by individual traffic. On the section between Fritz-Löffler-Straße and Ackermannstraße, around 7,000 vehicles drive around a day with a heavy load share of one to two percent. On the section between Fritz-Löffler-Strasse and Bergstrasse, the volume of traffic is significantly lower at around 2,600 vehicles per day. The City of Dresden does not collect any traffic counts between Ackermannstrasse and Teplitzer Strasse (Weberplatz). Reichenbachstrasse is consistently accessible on two lanes.

Reichenbachstrasse is used for parallel parking on almost its entire length. There are footpaths on both sides of the parking areas. Bus traffic along the street only occurs when the 117th elementary school is occasionally served by school bus traffic .

A bus and tram stop on Fritz-Löffler-Straße at the corner of Reichenbachstraße is called "Reichenbachstraße (Studentenwerk)". The tram lines 3 and 8, the city bus line 66 and regional transport lines stop there .
