Karibow is a German progressive rock band that combines essential elements of Neo-Prog with the compositional characteristics of Adult Orientated Rock (AOR). Karibow's music is characterized by clear melody lines, rhythmically complex arrangements and epic, sometimes futuristic text content. There is a musical relationship to bands such as Saga , Marillion and Toto . In December 2014 Karibow was awarded the German Rock & Pop Prize for “Best Progressive Band”.

history

Founding phase (1996–1999)

Karibow was founded in the winter of 1996/97 by multi-instrumentalist Oliver Rüsing (born February 8, 1969) as an originally six-member band project. The early compositions were shaped by different musical influences, but due to the open attitude of all musicians involved, these combined to form their own, varied style.

Karibov in 1997

The band initially tended towards hard rock , but already in the early years a development towards rhythmic, experimental grooves and hookline- heavy compositions could be recognized. In addition, the band integrated various electronic instruments such as B. Sequencer . Musically responsible was mainly Oliver Rüsing, who had already worked as a live and studio musician in Europe and North America with bands such as Last Turion, Counterparts, Chinook, Maquis and the Canadian Swell Guys in the 1990s. For this reason , the first Karibow productions appeared under pseudonyms that Rüsing had previously used in solo projects. The name Karibow first appeared in 1998 on the album Supernatural Foe Vocalized . Despite successful band work together, a creative core developed within the project, which consisted of Oliver Rüsing and Berthold Fehmer, as most of the founding members were also involved in other musical areas beyond Karibow.

"Tribal Avenue" (1999-2003)

Due to the open project structure, Karibow had become a two-man musical project with Rüsing and Fehmer in 1999. The remaining duo now mainly turned to studio work and was involved in various audio productions. With the neo-progressive concept album Three Times Deeper , Karibow's first phase of development ended in the same year, as the band began to orientate itself more towards classical melodic rock at the beginning of the new millennium . Tribe (2000) and Tribal Avenue (2001) were therefore much less experimental than the band's first productions and are in parts mainstream .

Keyboarder and pianist Berthold Fehmer devoted himself to working with the Dorsten progressive rock band Junk Farm, which he founded in 2001 together with guitarist Benjamin Schippritt.

"Ayganyan Project I" (2003-2007)

Karibow worked from 2003 on the music for the art project "The Ayganyan Project I". The digital experimental film required a monumental robe of sound, which the band completed with the second edition of the "Ayganyan Project I" soundtrack in 2007. With this soundtrack, Karibow came full circle to his own past, shaped by electronic influences, because no acoustic instrument can be heard during the 59 minutes of the album.

In 2005, Besser Karibows was the only native-speaking piece of music to date in maxi-CD format. Besser was later released again as the English-language version Better on the album A History of Inorganic Talk .

"Inorganic Talk" (2007-2011)

Oliver Rüsing live on the Yamaha DTXtreme IIS in 2006

Progressive rock influences returned between 2006 and 2008 with the concept album A History of Inorganic Talk in Karibow's music. Shortly thereafter, Inorganic Talk (Acoustic) and Hollow Be My World II, two EPs followed , which contained acoustic versions of two songs released on the previous album. In addition, both mini-albums again contained stylistically overlapping, more complex studio material.

Karibow had only been seen live sporadically and mostly unplugged since the turn of the millennium . Oliver Rüsing had also started performing solo electronic compositions parallel to his studio work. A greatly expanded electronic drum kit and digital sampling played an essential role during performances .

From studio to live project (2011-2020)

Following the release of the album Man of Rust and the receipt of the first German Rock & Pop Prize at the end of 2011, Rüsing decided to restore the project to its original band character fifteen years after it was founded. As a result, Karibow developed from a studio to a live project by 2014, which initially consisted of a changing line-up, until the band finally formed with Markus Bergen (keyboard), Gerald Nahrgang (drums), Oliver Rüsing (vocals, guitar) and Christopher Thomas (Guitar, vocals) and Thomas Wischt (bass) had established as a permanent formation. In November 2014 Karibow released the studio album Addicted , on whose production Rüsing worked with Eroc as part of the mastering . Keyboard player Markus Bergen died suddenly and unexpectedly in July 2016, before guitarist Christopher Thomas left the band in October 2016. He was replaced by Jörg Eschrig until autumn 2017, who had already been involved in the recordings of the Holophinium album. Live the four-piece formation was reinforced by Marek Arnold ( Seven Steps to the Green Door / Toxic Smile ) on keyboard and saxophone . In 2018, in addition to the studio albums The Unchosen and MOnuMENTO , the side project Karibow Acoustic was created , within which Rüsing reinterpreted acoustically arranged versions of various Karibow songs from twenty years of band history live together with guitarist Martin Schroer, Gerald Nahrgang and other band members. Since spring 2019, Karibow has been live again with Oliver Rüsing, Gerald Nahrgang on drums, Guido Seifert on keyboards, Felix Jäger on bass and Philipp Dauenhauer on guitar. The MOnuMENTour, which began with the release concert of the album Supernatural Foe Rebirth at the end of June 2019 in Nieuwerkerk, the Netherlands, then took the band through Great Britain and North America, where the tour concluded in Chicago in October 2019. Both the acoustic approach and the tour are taken into account by the double album Essence , released on April 15, 2020 , which consists of an acoustic CD ( Essentially Acoustic ) and a live album ( Essentially Live ) recorded during the MOnuMENTour , to which Hayley Griffiths also contributed hear, who was involved as a guest singer in the studio production MOnuMENTO in 2018 . With a running time of almost 140 minutes, Essence is the most comprehensive Karibow album to date.

Cooperation with the international progressive rock scene (since 2016)

Karibow live with Michael Sadler 2016

Saga singer Michael Sadler and Australian keyboardist Sean Timms ( Unitopia / Southern Empire) contributed to the Karibow double album Holophinium , which was released on April 4, 2016 by Progressive Promotion Records . In the following month Karibow went on tour together with Saga and presented part of their program together with Michael Sadler. In addition to Rüsing and his fellow musicians, the 2017 production From Here to the Impossible also featured Saga keyboardist Jim Gilmour, Australian singer Mark Trueack (Unitopia / United Progressive Fraternity), saxophonist and keyboardist Marek Arnold as well as Sean Timms and Daniel Lopresto (both Southern Empire) to listen. In addition, with the Catalan-Dutch singer Monique van der Kolk (Harvest), a female artist was also involved in a Karibow album for the first time since the band was founded. In 2018 the series of international guests continued on the MOnuMENTO production with singers Hayley Griffiths, Nik Koray and Simone Stiers. In addition, mystery head Michel St-Père, keyboardist John Young (Lifesigns / Bonnie Tyler ), Antony Kalugin (Karfagen / Sunchild) and the Scottish singer Joe Cairney (Comedy of Errors), along with other artists, made musical contributions to the on November 15, 2018 released double album.

Surname

Karibow 2015

The name Karibow is derived from the East African Kiswahili / Swahili, in which the term "Karibu" is used as a welcome greeting. In order to avoid a tonal confusion with the reindeer of the same name , Oliver Rüsing redesigned the term “Karibu” in 1996 due to his preference to take on the character of the ranger with a bow in role-playing games (“carrying a bow”).

Working method

Karibow are sometimes still described as a one-man project and only secondarily as a band. The reason for this is that the band is produced by Oliver Rüsing, who is also responsible for all compositions and studio arrangements. However, all band members are equally responsible for the live arrangements. Karibow has repeatedly described this approach as efficient and productive in the past. In April 2015, however, Rüsing referred in an interview with the American online magazine Music Web Express to a significantly greater participation of his band colleagues and other international guest musicians in upcoming productions, although he did not question the fundamental separation between studio and live projects in recent interviews.

Awards

Karibow with the German Rock & Pop Prize 2014

In 2011 Karibow received the German Rock & Pop Prize of the DRMV ( German Rock & Pop Musicians Association ) for Man of Rust in the “Best Arrangement” category. The award ceremony took place on December 17th of that year in the Rhein-Main-Hallen in Wiesbaden .

Three years later, one month after the release of their album Addicted on November 16, 2014, the band was again awarded the German Rock & Pop Prize in Siegen, this time in the “Best Progressive Band” category. In response to press speculation about Karibow's band character, Oliver Rüsing and drummer Gerald Nahrgang accepted the award together on December 13th of that year in the Siegerlandhalle .

In September 2017, the Los Angeles-based Akademia Karibow presented the “Best Rock Song” award for the title Inside You .
