Karl Grieseler shipyard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Karl-Grieseler-Werft was a shipyard in Mukrena an der Saale , a district of the town of Könnern in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

It was founded at the beginning of the 20th century when Karl Grieseler took over the shipyard from August Jersch in Mukrena. On August 12, 1913, the shipyard's first iron barge was launched . Grieseler's shipyard flourished, and in 1920 he also leased the municipal shipbuilding site at the winter port of Magdeburg , where a shipyard operated by various owners existed from the 1870s until the war-related closure in 1915. Grieseler's shipyard in Mukrena continued to be operated by his son-in-law, but both shipyards worked closely together under Grieseler's management, so closely that the builders Magdeburg and Mukrena were managed together and it is therefore not always clear which ship was built where. In 1930, Grieseler also expanded to the site on the south-western end of the Magdeburg Winter Harbor, where the Prussian State Shipyard was built in 1881/1882.

The shipyard was privately owned until 1956, after which it became semi-public and from 1972 a state-owned company (VEB).

Known ships

The Lichtenberg , a district class ship in front of the Glienicker Bridge
The Phantasia , ex Richard Wossidlo

Among the best-known ships built by the Karl-Grieseler-Werft are the eight passenger ships of the " Stadtbezirksklasse 2 " built between 1969 and 1980 , all of which are still in use today in Berlin, on the Müritz and on the Schwerin Lakes . The series consisted of the 32.7 m long "trial ship" Treptow , built between 1967 and 1969, which was found to be too short for the Berlin area and too high because of the bridges there, and the then considerably modified and about 7 m longer and from 1972 built seven units of the actual series. These were the Fontane and the Richard Wossidlo for the White Fleet Müritz in Waren and for Berlin the Köpenick , the Friedrichshain , the Lichtenberg , the Pankow , and the Prenzlauerberg . At 39.5 m long, 5.10 m wide and 0.95 m draft, they had a passenger capacity of around 300 people on two decks. They had stern drive and two SKL diesel engines, each with 76 kW (104 PS), which enabled them to travel at a speed of 12 km / h.

A second well-known series of ships at the shipyard were the “Mukrena” type motor tugs such as the Bernburg , Plau , Barby , Derben , Schwerin and Torgau .

Successor operation

After the turnaround in 1990 the shipyard came into private ownership again, but the poor order situation and many outstanding debts drove the company into bankruptcy in December 1996 . Except for the slipway , all machines were sold to a Dutch scrap company. Part of the remaining ownership was passed to Bernd Fischer , who took over the Mukrena shipyard on February 1, 1997 and initially started over with ship repairs. The "Schiffswerft Fischer", a family business, is the only remaining shipyard on the Saale today. A shipbuilding hall, a locksmith's building and a slipway with 7 transverse slip cars and a longitudinal slipway are located on around 3000 m² of the factory premises. Company-owned truck-mounted cranes are used for loading sports boats. In addition to repairs and services, the shipyard's work now includes special new ships.
