List of passenger shipping companies in Berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of passenger shipping companies in Berlin shows the shipping companies and companies or corporations under private law that are active in Berlin and the surrounding area in the 21st century on Berlin's waters. Together they operate around 150  passenger ships (as of summer 2018).
The list does not claim to be complete.

introduction

Almost all of the ships used are powered by diesel engines , which have been criticized by environmentalists for their soot particle emissions. Measurements on a bridge on the Museum Island on July 25, 2014 showed that the concentration of fine dust particles can be up to 15 times higher than the permissible limit values. The Senate then funded a pilot project with the help of which the Stern and Kreis shipping company fitted three of its ships with filters. The Riedel shipping company even equipped the Spree-Diamant ship with two such protective systems. The Kreuzberg ship also received two soot filters in 2015. With these systems, up to 97 percent of the pollutants can be retained. Despite these first measures, the reduction in dust particle exposure has not been achieved to a large extent within four years. More recent measurements in the summer of 2018 above the Weidendammer Bridge and with a measurement trip behind a passenger ship on behalf of the Association of Electric Shipping showed values that were more than ten times higher, which clearly exceeded the EU limit values. The Federal Environment Agency has calculated that the emission of harmful substances from shipping - including freight transport - accounts for around 30 percent of fine dust and nitrogen oxide pollution in large cities. The above-mentioned association wants the Berlin Senate to make the allocation of jetties and the approval of routes more dependent on environmental protection; the electric ships are to be granted more rights. The around 70 ships of the larger shipping companies operating on Berlin's waters can hardly be retrofitted with filters because they are not available for all ship engines. The sales volume is too small for the filter producers. The association representatives are demanding more concrete measures from the Senate.

With the growing volume of traffic on the waterways around Potsdam and Berlin, the traditional shipping area of the Weisse Flotte Potsdam , the company will use the synthetic, paraffinic fuel Shell GTL Fuel Marine on all of its ships at the start of the 2019 season . The company's own gas station in Potsdam, which is also available to the sports boats to supply fuel and fresh water, will only offer synthetic fuel. The shipping company wants to contribute to the reduction of the possible local pollution of the environment and to air improvement.

In 2013 the Federal Ministry of Transport issued a new ordinance for operators of all types of ships on federal waterways. This only allows boats for which no wood is used and which have at least two engines to operate passenger shipping. Charter ships, saloon ships, party rafts and pleasure boats with a boat driver are particularly affected. A sharp implementation has not yet become known (as of 2019).

Overview

The compilation, divided into individual lists, is sorted alphabetically according to the owner's proper name or surname. If known, the ship's locations are also given. The ship or fleet with the associated technical data and its history are included directly under the respective companies. The list includes the prefix to the ship name, where MS stands for motor ship and DS for steam ship. The tables are largely sortable.

The steamer was built in Tangermünde in 1911 at the Fritz Bettins & Sons shipyard and was used as a tug near Magdeburg until 1921. After that, the ship went under the name Iltis as a tug and icebreaker until 1962 on the Havel, Elbe and the canals; the home port was Zehdenick . After decommissioning, the steamer was dismantled down to the hull. A private initiative ensured that a shipyard in Malchow was rebuilt and in 1998 the ship went into service as a passenger ship with a diesel engine. The appearance of a steamer was deliberately retained.

Ludicke

Overview and development

The shipping company Lüdicke, owner Hendrik Prössel-Jürgensen based in Berlin-Spandau , operates the passenger ships cheerfulness , coat of arms Spandau and Havel luck . The ship piers Spandau (Lindenufer), Kladow (Irmchenplatz), the pier opposite the Pfaueninsel and one at Wannsee / Zehlendorf (directly at the Berlin-Wannsee train station ) are kept ready for the trips .

The ship Heiterkeit was launched in 1909 at the Maass Brothers shipyard in Neustrelitz under the name of Karl Wilhelm . Under the owner Arthur Haupt, the ship served as a tugboat on the Brandenburg waterways between the Elbe and Oder .

After the Second World War , the Karl Wilhelm went on hamster trips to Werder for Berliners . When the steamship era came to an end in the 1950s, the shipowner had a diesel engine installed and the ship converted for passenger traffic. Under the new name Heiterkeit it drove from Berlin-Spandau (Lindenufer) via the Spree and Havel. With the construction of the Berlin Wall , excursions were limited to the waters in West Berlin .

In 1975 there was a change of ownership, Horst Schmidt took over the ship. His family business continued the scheduled and charter trips from the Spandau Lindenufer berth on the Großer Wannsee , Kleiner Wannsee and Pohlesee routes to Stölpchensee and back.

The fall of the Berlin Wall led to an expansion of the sailing area to Potsdam and Werder. The Schmidt family sold the ship to the shipping company Peter Lüdicke ReLuST (shipping company Lüdicke and Sons, daughter) in 2006. The tours have now been extended to the inner city of Berlin ( Spree and Landwehr Canal ), to Berlin-Kladow , to the Teltow Canal and to Brandenburg an der Havel . In 2011, Hendrik Prössel − Jürgensen took over the management from his father. He had the ship modernized extensively and added a tour from Berlin-Mitte to Müggelsee . The historic ship is now one of many tourist offers in Berlin. Jürgensen is supported in his work by family and friends. The ship Angela has been part of the company since 2014 . It was sold in 2019. From 2018 the passenger ship Wappen von Spandau expanded the fleet. In 2019 with the start of the season came the Havelglück , ex. Havelland from Rathenow to it.

MS MS Marple 1930 27 0 19.00 / 3.30 ex Stralau , ex unit , ex Bade III , ex Eichhorst The ship was built in 1930 in the Exquisitwerft Wildau as a steamship and christened Eichhorst . In the GDR the ship was named Stralau , was converted to diesel propulsion, and the passenger compartment was given simple S-Bahn benches.
After the Oggesens had acquired the ship, they had it completely renewed in 2008/09 in the Kuhlke shipyard in Niederlehme and gave it a new name, "of course, a female". The deck superstructures were raised according to the new owner's plans and the saloon got a new interior.
The prefix MS, from English Ms. , is an exception to the ship's name, alluding to Miss Marple .
The owner Katrin Oggesen, who studied architecture, is also the captain and takes turns with two other skippers. The mahogany paneled salon is furnished with comfortable leather armchairs.

Restaurant, seminar and charter ships

Capt'n Schillow and Pauline in the Landwehr Canal; 2012
  • The restaurant ship Capt'n Schillow , about 25 m long, has been lying at the berth at Strasse des 17. Juni / Am Charlottenburger Tor since 1997 . It was built in 1909 as a steel sailing ship at the Johann Thormälen shipyard in Elmshorn and christened Engelke up de Müre . It served as a cement transporter on the Elbe. In 1943 it was sold to Cuxhaven and after conversion (extension, elevation plus superstructure) it was used as a coaster, mainly in trade with Scandinavia . In 1984 the ship came to the Emden Yacht Club, which used the sailor as the club's headquarters. In the late autumn of 1986 a private citizen from Berlin bought the ship and had it converted into a restaurant ship. When it was reopened, it was named after the captain Werner Schillow, a ship broker and nautical instructor in Hamburg and Berlin and founder of a shipping company based in Berlin in 1908.
  • Restaurant ship Van Loon , has been in the Urbanhafen in Berlin-Kreuzberg since 2001.
It is a 31 m long replica based on a historical sailing ship.
  • Restaurant ship Alte Liebe with berth in Berlin-Grunewald on the Havel at Postfenn / Havelchaussee. The current ship was originally built as an Elbe steamer and replaced its predecessor after reconstruction in 1970, whose name it took over.
SpreeArche
  • The SpreeArche restaurant ship , designed like a raft with a representative wooden structure, was located in Berlin-Friedrichshagen , but moved to Baumschulenweg near Treptower Park in the late 2010s . It is completely in the water, visitors have to ring the bell and a small boat picks them up on the bank.
It was built around 1880 as a sailing boat and was converted into a restaurant ship in 2001. The names of the small dishes on offer are original, for example life raft (matjes herring and rollmops with pumpernickel) or Käpt'n-Smoker-Platte (honey and herb salmon, scrambled eggs and North Sea shrimps). Visitors to the Klipper can also eat freshly smoked fish on board or take small excursion boats to downtown Berlin or across the large Müggelsee.
  • Restaurant ship Patio has its berth in the Hansaviertel . In the opinion of the ship operator, it is a particularly noble ship with high-quality food. It has a glass roof and a bar in the lower part, in which cocktails and wines are offered.
  • On the former rear- wheel motorized tug Jeseniky , the deck structure was converted into a restaurant, which operates under the name Deckshaus . It is firmly moored in Berlin-Mitte in the historic harbor. It is mainly a meeting place for former seamen, inland waterwaymen and friends of the Rostock shipping company .
  • Charter ship Pauline : built in 1901 as a tugboat for port trips. After conversion and restoration as a charter ship for a maximum of 50 passengers on Berlin's waterways.
Agora
  • Agora , a seminar ship, operated by the Berlin speakers school founded in 1991. The ship was created through the total renovation of a push boat of the canal push boat type 190 Z (KSS 23) . It is 14.25 m long and 8.24 m wide.

Hotel ships

  • Eastern Comfort : Built in 1991 by order of the White Fleet Potsdam at a Genthiner shipyard as a hotel ship, christened Frederick the Great . In 2000 sold to Wilhelmshaven , where it was named Rüstringer Friese and was used there during Expo 2000 . After the owner went bankrupt, the ship lay unused in Wilhelmshaven until 2005. Then Edgar Schmidt bought it from Groeling and brought it to Berlin. Here it is located on the Spree near the Oberbaumbrücke on the Friedrichshain side on Mühlenstraße and serves as a backpacker hostel boat.
  • Western Comfort : Also commissioned by the same owner in the 21st century. Serves as another backpacker hostel boat.
