Karl Alexander Wilke (born July 16, 1879 in Leipzig , † February 27, 1954 in Vienna ) was a German-Austrian painter, illustrator and set designer.

biography

Wilke studied from 1898 to 1902 with Ludwig Nieper at the Art Academy in Leipzig , from 1902 to 1903 in Karlsruhe with E. Schruth and in 1902 again in Leipzig with Max Seliger . From November 1903 he worked in Vienna. From 1904 to 1907 he worked for the magazine Der Scherer - the first illustrated Tyrolean joke sheet for politics, art and life . From 1905 to 1918 he worked for the magazine Die Muskete . From 1913 to 1923 he worked at the Vienna Burgtheater as head of equipment. Among other things, he designed book covers and dust jackets , e.g. B. for the Wiener Literarisches Anstalt , the Leopold Stocker Verlag (from 1938), the Burgverlag, the Amalthea-Verlag, Konegen's children's books , Friedrich Wallisch's The Violence. From 1923 to 1938 he was active as an illustrator and artistic advisor at the Austrian Federal Publishing House. As a member of the NSDAP, Wilke was appointed provisional director of the Austrian Federal Publishing House three days after the annexation of Austria by the regional cultural director of the German National Socialist Workers' Party (Austria) , Hermann Stuppäck . The publisher was then renamed Österreichischer Landesverlag, formerly Österreichischer Bundesverlag , and the publishing program in the Börsenblatt for the German book trade was described as follows: “Landeskunde. Maps. World War I blackboards. Landscape. Folk and customs. History. Song. Art u. Ostmark poetry has been cultivated areas of the publishing house for many years. ”From 1908 to 1910 he was a member of the Hagenbund , and from 1941 of the Künstlerhaus Wien . He was close to Karl Hans Strobl .
