Karl August Poorten

Karl August Poorten , also Karl August von der Poorten (* March 14, 1817 in Riga , Livonia Gouvernement ; † May 7, 1880 there ), was a German-Baltic painter and illustrator of the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Poorten was one of thirteen children of the Riga real estate agent Adolph Gottfried Poorten (1770–1826) and his wife Johanna Barbara, née von Martens (1779–1855). After a commercial apprenticeship, he went to Düsseldorf and studied painting at the Royal Prussian Art Academy under Heinrich Mücke and Karl Ferdinand Sohn . He also had study visits to Munich and Dresden . From 1850 to 1853/1854 he was a member of the Düsseldorf artists' association Malkasten . From 1853 Poorten worked as a painter in Riga.
