Karl Bartholomäus Heller
Karl Bartholomäus Heller (born November 20, 1824 in Mislibořitz in Moravia , † December 14, 1880 in Vienna ) was an Austrian teacher and naturalist .
Life
Heller, whose father headed the Viennese horticultural association, showed an early interest in the natural sciences, the studies of which he soon turned to. From 1845 to 1848 he traveled to Mexico on behalf of the Horticultural Association and sent a total of 50 boxes with botanical and zoological objects to Vienna. After temporarily unpaid work at the Vienna Natural History Cabinet , Heller was appointed as a supplement for natural history at a high school in Graz in 1851 . In 1853 he was appointed professor and then taught from 1856 to 1858 at the Olmütz grammar school and from 1858 to 1880 at the Theresianum in Vienna. In 1854 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
Karl Bartholomäus Heller died on December 14, 1880 at the age of 56 in Vienna. He was the father of Karl Maria Heller .
Act
Heller's descriptions of the previously little-known areas of Tabasco and Chiapas are classified as particularly valuable. The fish species Xyphophorus hellerii was named after him.
