Life

Karl Baumgarten was born as the son of the engine driver Adolf Joachim Ludwig Baumgarten. He attended the community school from 1916 to 1919 and the grammar school in Waren (Müritz) from 1919 to 1921 , where Richard Wossidlo was his Latin teacher. Then he was from 1921 to 1928 at the large city school in Rostock. From 1928 to 1930 he studied to be a primary school teacher at the Pedagogical Institute Rostock a. a. with Johann Ulrich Folkers . After that he was a teacher at the Poppentin village school from 1930 to 1933 and at the Federow village school near Waren until 1943 , where he also worked as a cantor. Drafted into military service in 1943, he returned from American captivity in 1946 and settled in Rostock. Initially engaged in unskilled labor , he returned to teaching from 1950, after a year in Kröpelin he came to the Rostock St. Georg School in 1951, where he became director.

Even during his studies at Folkers he was concerned with Mecklenburg folklore , research into rural architecture, settlement and house research. His first publications appeared in the 1940s. In 1955 he published the text "Problems of Mecklenburg Lower Saxony House Research" and his first book "The Land of Black Farmers". As a result, he was appointed to the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin (DAW) in 1957 . In 1958 he was appointed head of the Wossidlo research center in Rostock, a branch of the Institute for German Folklore of the DAW. He held this position until his retirement in 1975. With the book "Zimmermannswerk in Mecklenburg - Die Scheune" Baumgarten was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. He was one of the initiators of the community of interest (IG) “Monuments of rural folk building”, which was part of the Kulturbund , and was a supporter of the establishment and construction of the open-air museums Klockenhagen , Schwerin-Mueß and Alt Schwerin . The present-day monumental character of the village of Lichtenhagen near Rostock with its Low German hall houses is also due to his initiative. In 1982 he was awarded the Leibniz Medal of the Academy and in 1983 he received the Rostock District Culture Prize .
