Karl Bennert (born December 24, 1815 in Dortmund , † July 25, 1894 in Zurich ) was a German-Swiss portrait , history and landscape painter .

Karl Bennert studied from 1832 to 1838 at the Royal Prussian Art Academy in Düsseldorf with Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow and Karl Ferdinand Sohn and continued his studies from 1838 to 1848 in Brussels and Paris . He then worked temporarily in Berlin , Dresden and Prague , and settled in Frankfurt am Main for a longer period of time . In 1867 he was granted Zurich citizenship and moved to Zurich in 1868.

His most famous works include Golo, listening to the song of the shepherds and Van Dyck paints the portrait of Karl I. He also copied the painting by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein Goethe in the Campagna di Roma (copy in the Goethe House in Frankfurt ).
