Karl Christian Kanis Gretschel

Karl Christian Kanis Gretschel , also Carl Christian Carus Gretschel (born April 9, 1803 in Leipzig , † March 14, 1848 ibid) was a German lawyer and historian .

Life

The son of a wealthy iron trader lost his parents at the age of 11. Since then he has lived with an aunt and attended grammar school in Bautzen . On April 6, 1820, he was matriculated at the University of Leipzig and began studying law . Leaning towards the theater, he broke off his studies to become an actor, but then came to the decision to pursue a career in science. From 1822 he continued his law studies at the Georg-August University in Göttingen and received his doctorate in philosophy on March 4, 1824 in Leipzig . He then worked as an actuary in Hainichenand qualified as a doctor of law on December 11, 1828 at the University of Leipzig . Gretschel gave lectures on law at the university.

In 1830 he began working in the editorial office of the Leipziger Zeitung . After the government took over the newspaper, he became the second editor. From 1833 he was also the editor of the Dresden state parliament communications and from 1838 to 1845 he was the editor of the Leipziger Tageblatt. After Friedrich Christian August Hasse resigned as the first editor of the Leipziger Zeitung in 1846 , Gretschel was entrusted with the sole editing.

As a historian, Gretschel wrote a number of works on the history of the city about Leipzig. His history of the Saxon people , which was to appear in three volumes, has remained unfinished; only the first volume was published in 1843.

Gretschel became a member of the Leipzig Masonic Lodge Balduin zur Linde on November 30, 1830 . After he was promoted to journeyman on November 27, 1838 and master on January 22, 1839, he was the first overseer of the lodge from 1840 to 1841. In 1842 he was elected Master of the Chair , which he remained until his death. As a master of the chair, he suggested a translation of the Halliwell manuscript by his lodge brother Hermann Marggraff . Gretschel wrote a historical introduction to this publication.

Karl Christian Kanis Gretschel married Julie born in 1828. Müller. Their son, Carl Julius Carus (* 1829), was enrolled in medicine at the University of Leipzig on April 11, 1856.
