Karl Dürr (philosopher)

Karl Rudolf Dürr (born June 16, 1888 in Zurich ; † September 18, 1970 there ) was a Swiss philosopher .

Life

Born in Zurich, Karl Dürr obtained the federal Matura in 1906 at the cantonal literature high school in his hometown. He then turned to the study of philosophy and German literature at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich , the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin and at the University of Zurich to, there took place in 1912 his doctorate to Dr. phil. at Willy Freytag .

Dürr then took up a position as a research assistant at the University of Zurich, in 1916 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in the history of philosophy and systematic philosophy, in 1925 he was promoted to adjunct professor and in 1935 to extraordinary professor of logic , epistemology and the history of modern philosophy. In 1958 he retired.

Dürr, who is one of the pioneers of logical positivism in the Vienna Circle , published, among other things, the study New Illumination of a Theory by Leibniz  : Fundamentals of Logical Calculus, which was influenced by Bertrand Russell and Clarence Irving Lewis , published in 1930 by Otto Reichl Verlag in Darmstadt .

Karl Dürr died in autumn 1970 as the widower of Hedwig, born Landolt, at the age of 83 in his hometown of Zurich.
