Charles Emanuel IV of Sardinia

Karl Emanuel IV. Ferdinand Maria , Italian Carlo Emanuele IV. Fernando Maria (born May 24, 1751 in Turin , † October 6, 1819 in Rome ), was King of Sardinia and Duke of Savoy from October 16, 1796 to June 4, 1802 .

Life

Charles Emanuel IV was the eldest son of King Viktor Amadeus III. of Sardinia and Maria Antonia of Spain . On his mother's side, he was therefore a grandson of the Spanish King Philip V. The later Cardinal Hyacinthe Sigismond Gerdil acted as his tutor .

In 1796 he succeeded his father as King of Sardinia and Duke of Savoy on the throne.

In 1775 he married Clothilde of France , a sister of King Louis XVI. from France. The marriage remained childless. Sickly and without energy, he was robbed of his possessions on the mainland by the French in 1798 and retired to Sardinia in 1799 . Clothilde died on March 7, 1802. Very touched by the death of his wife, Karl Emanuel decided to abdicate. He left the throne of Sardinia to his brother Victor Emanuel I , but not the Duchy of Savoy, and settled in Rome and Frascati .

In Frascati he was a frequent guest of his third-degree great-uncle Henry Benedict Stuart , Cardinal Duke of York . This was the second son of James Francis Edward Stuart ( The Old Pretender , 1688-1766), a son of the English King James II , last King of the Stuarts , who had been deposed by the Glorious Revolution . After the death of the Cardinal Duke in 1807, the Jacobites regarded Karl Emanuel, a great-great-grandson of King Charles I through his youngest daughter Henriette Anne, - as the closest relative of the Stuarts - as Charles IV , King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland. Karl Emanuel himself never publicly claimed this title.

In 1815 Karl Emanuel joined the Jesuits . He was not ordained a priest by them and lived as a novice in Rome until his death . He died there on October 6, 1819 and is buried in the church of Sant 'Andrea al Quirinale .
