Karl Ernst Richter (born February 18, 1795 in Zwickau , † April 8, 1863 in Kötzschenbroda ) was a German Protestant clergyman , liberal journalist and member of the state parliament , the assembly of estates of the Kingdom of Saxony .

Life

After studying in Leipzig with a master's degree, Richter became a teacher in Schneeberg in 1818 and Conrector at the grammar school in Zwickau in 1819. Richter was there Robert Schumann's teacher during his Zwickau high school time. Richter, who followed the ideas of the Enlightenment, later resigned from his position as a deacon at the Marienkirche in Zwickau.

As a liberal journalist, Richter published the satirical-political weekly Die Biene in Zwickau from 1827 to 1833 . With this he fought, with a readership far beyond Zwickau, for popular education and a constitution in Saxony. In it he advocated reforms, but clearly opposed revolutionary violence. In 1832 Richter was elected city councilor and deputy mayor in Zwickau. In the same year he became a member of the second chamber of the state parliament in the 15th urban electoral district (Zwickau, Werdau , Crimmitschau , Lichtenstein and Kirchberg ) . He advocated the abolition of the feudal system without compensation. "But in the end he was silenced by the censorship and ruined in his bourgeois life by official banter despite his position as a member of the state parliament". 1833 The bee prohibited and Richter had 1833 or 1835 in the United States emigrate, 1836 he went to Switzerland.

With false hopes he came back from there to Saxony in May 1848 and published Die Biene again . In December 1848 Richter was re-elected to the state parliament by the fatherland associations of the constituency in Reichenbach . In December 1849 his newspaper was banned again and he was also banned from working. He then retired to Kötzschenbroda in 1852 and earned his living with private lessons and public lectures. In the early 1860s, Richter became seriously ill, so that he became needy. As a result, the Sächsische Constitutionelle Zeitung , published in Dresden by Franz Ludwig Siegel, carried out collections for the “father of the bees”. Richter died almost completely destitute on April 8, 1863.
